Very nice colors and patterns in that piece. Man, those Rio woods are weird and interesting. Have no idea what kind that is but it sure looks burly or knotty....Mel

I've found a few pieces with crazy grain like that, think maybe stump material. In stumps I've cut up, the grain goes every which way.

Ok, I gotta ask-what the heck is a rio? Gravels in and along the Rio Grande River. From agate rich lava fields sloping towards the Rio Grand washed ? down to S Texas from Mexico, W Texas, and probably from further upstream. Beautiful patterns in those cuts, but the outer skin is also interesting.

Lot of this seems stump wood. It was mentioned that lava flows often burn off the tops of plant life and the stump is the part that gets petrified.

first thing i thought was sponge . You do find marine fossils there too, right ? i have quite a few sponges and they look like this.
