Are there any locations to either find natural occuring turquoise to dig or fee locations that have material to dig.? Seems like every search turns up either closed mines or outdated information. Looking to head west for a trip in the spring and want to spend several days rockhounding. Thanks ! Frank

It's tied up pretty tight. Most of it is just plain gone. Occasionally folks find "hat" veins. About enough to fill your hat.

wear this hat if you go! Where are you headed? May be better to plan your hounding around the locations than a specific rock type.

I know of a new turquoise find that may be opening after spring thaw. Friend located a nice vein on property he has under claim for another rock type. Can't give more info at this time, but there are still finds to be made out there.

I dug a couple of pounds of Turquoise last April near Tonopah Nevada. The mine isn't open right now due to a death in the family. I'm hoping it will open again. I will definitely go back. It was a great day & everyone in our rock club came home happy. Lynn

Just spotted some new deposits a few days ago and will be exploring them more in depth in a week or so.

Nice rocks. How do you extract them - hammer and chisel?

Well it is nice to know that some material is being found. Turquoise is such a wonderful material but every theif tries to make a fortune with it , copy it or sell fake stuff so I just don't want to buy it on eBay because you never know.i just see more value and beauty in material you have collected yourself. Unfortunately living in Michigan I don't have the luxury of good turquoise mines close by lol.

I love Jasper's and agates of all types so I may plan a trip around around those instead and hope to find some turquoise and chrysocolla maybe

Unfortunately living in Michigan I don't have the luxury of good turquoise mines close by lol. There are a lot of turquoise mines out this way in Nevada, California and Arizona as far as close to where I live. Pulled a bunch of turquoise out of one mine in California several years ago. It was pretty well cleaned out but I found a lot in the dirt under a fallen ladder everyone missed. Found another piece in Afton Canyon a few years ago. There are three mines locally I have found turquoise in. And heard rumors of another abandoned mine with lots of turquoise close by in Arizona. I think I located it on Google Earth. Found 4 potentials this way, but one mine I was already able to rule out. So will be heading down there to check out the one I suspect most soon. And I have a friend who has a ranch North of here where there is an old abandoned turquoise mine close by the ranch. So when it warms up I will try to get back up there. Funny thing is that I never liked turquoise until I found my own. What you see in stores is so often stabilized with epoxy, so to me it looks like cheap plastic stones. I love the naturally hard turquoise like these: 20160828_164515 by James Sloane, on Flickr 20160828_164845 by James Sloane, on Flickr 20160828_164426 by James Sloane, on Flickr 20160828_163920 by James Sloane, on Flickr 20160919_132906-1 by James Sloane, on Flickr 20160919_133008-1 by James Sloane, on Flickr

I wonder if that is just for the season, or if liability became to much of an issue ?

I was told two seasons ago that the Ottesons sold the claims to the chinese. They were to still manage and dig but there would be no more tours. One of the brothers was not doing well. They still have the shops in town and still go to shows. They were at Pow Wow in Qusrtzsite year b4 last. I didna go last year. They were only actively mining one claim and getting primarily ribbon type rough. I hope they continue to cut because they bring bestiful jewelry to the shows!

Wow sorry to hear that, well better to know now before planning a trip that way accordingly. Think I will try to go to Arizona for some cave Creek jasper and whatever else catches my eyes or wallet lol
