Have you done a check on what the weather will be like during that time period and for areas you may be considering? May help narrow down your hounding choices.
You looking for material to cab or tumble or both? You want to come home with a little of something great or a lot of something good? Digging or surface collecting / a lotta work or super easy? Flying somewhere, you going to be shipping rocks home or carrying them in your luggage? That trip time schedule set in stone?

When I do, great observation, I'll check weather. The time is set in stone. I much prefer QUALITY over Quantity. If I can carry back in luggage No prob but shipping it home if need be CAN BE DONE π I'd actually prefer it to be a challenge. If I find surface stuff along the way well kudos. I have my rock pick, chisel etc READY! I of course can't pack a shovel or baby Kabota in my luggage Capt'n. But don't ever put it past me to try...

Hey there, melhill1659. Ever gave the thought to mining fire agate? Western Arizona is prime fire agate country... Here is a link with some info. www.fireagate.us/index.shtmlThank you. That would be great!!! New kind of rockhounding and a totally insane agate! That's going on my "List" I'm starting now. I have to pick an area by nights end (going to be a Late Night) so we can book flights tomorrow. Told Con we need to book an SUV for our rental car. Remember you have to get the rocks home. Bring at least 1 empty suitcase. If you can find a post office that is open on Saturday you can send flat rate boxes back. High grade you're material at the end of the trip.

And add a personalized avatar picture to your profile settings someday. That generic avatar does nothing for ya! A rock or shop picture would work. just sayin'...

I bring a big suitcase. Put a medium case inside. That is for clothes... Come home with dirty clothes in a back pack and 2 suitcases at 50# ea for the rocks.

drocknutDiane, a fellow female rockhound can use a guide. YES PLEASE! drocknut πβΊοΈ I am in Quartzsite,Az right now. I'm familiar with some areas in Arizona. Your time line is tight so it would need to be places easily accessible and close to where you fly in. There are rockhounding locations near Phoenix but I'm not as familiar with that area.

Would love to find Malachite Azurite possibly fire agates. Any cool areas an hour or so near a major airport that you know of?

There is lots of malachite and to a lesser extent azurite about an hour from Las Vegas. This is malachite from Southern Nevada. The cab was made from a slab of a 91 pound chunk I brought down. 20160525_190709 by James Sloane, on Flickr Some of the azurite: 20160517_153136-2 by James Sloane, on Flickr And a mix of copper minerals: 20160517_153334-1 by James Sloane, on Flickr

East Texas is killer for fossils. Lake Texoma won't disappoint. I mean the quarry there.
Also, I believe you can fly into Yuma, AZ. Rent a car and it's a semi-major road up towards Quartzsite, Lake Havasu, etc. Since it's not very cold any longer, you still need a good deal of water, hat, sunscreen, etc.
