This guy on ebay has been selling little slabs of this and I've been scarfing it up. He calls it tiger iron from Mexico. I have never seen anything like it. Seems to be a jasper base with LOTS of hematite. All the black is hematite. It looks like burning embers. In person, it is stunning and I can't wait to cab it! I was wondering if this is just a weird tigertail or something else entirely. (I have never seen tigertail in person.) These are from the ads. --Thanks!

He just messed the name up. That is Tiger Tail Jasper from Mexico. Comes as a vein material but is found in Rio Grande gravel as cobbles. Runs from orange to yellow to red with black inclusions that tend to be a little softer in some instances, than the orange/yellow part. Black inclusions can be stripes or spots. Sometimes orbs too. Pics: Sweet! Thank you, Mel. I had seen pictures of the lighter variety, but none of the more darker red variety. It's really pretty stuff. (To me, anyway.)

Thurs or Fri should be nice enough to do some preforms- this is in the cue. Can't wait to see it cabbed. I have a bunch of small seam pieces, so I am hoping it comes out as nice as I think it will. Fingers crossed.....

Most all of it cabs real well with the dark ares winding up kind of silvery and very cool. But in some of the pieces, the manganese black areas are kind of dusty and soft. Those will undercut some on the wheels and sometimes badly in the tumbler. Overall, a really neat and highly variable cabbing material. I had gotten some down at a rock shop in Terlingua many years ago and it was the stuff with the soft spots and really disappointed me. Got some big vein hunks at the Fredericksburg show a few years ago and man, it was from a way better vein. The slices in the second pic came from that vein...Mel

I picked some of this material up at a rock shop in TX, I went to find it last week to slab some of it and its no where to be found. I think I gave it all away to friends and failed to save a piece for me.

rockjunquie guy listed a couple more last night - (in case you aren't watching) Thanks, I have a bunch now. I am cabbing one today to see how it comes out. eta- they really do look like his ads. I was skeptical at first, but in person, it really does look like smoldering embers.

Looking forward to seeing how it cabs for you! I don't cab, so very rarely buy slabs like that. Doing my eBay searches this morning and found it in my -hematite jasper- search. Pretty stuff, probably buy if it was a big ol' pound chunk of it.

Found a bit of that on the Rio. Seems to have hematite shine in the black zone. Maybe manganese does the metallic thing too. Not so dark like Tela's.

I just looked at that eBay listing. That guy lives about fifteen minutes from my house. I've met him a couple of times. He is in Arizona for the winter. He had a problem with his leg last summer when I went to his house, but this summer, we I might ask him to go rock hunting sometime.

I've bought from him a bunch of times. He's a good seller. I went to his house to buy cheap saw blades. His two garages were full of boxes of rocks, lapidary equipment, and other eBay stuff for sale. I looked at some of the lapidary equipment, but there were no good deals because he knows what stuff is worth. I'm going to go back and look at some of his slabs. He said that he has a huge amount of bumble bee jasper. I'll save some money on shipping.

Make sure to emphasize to him that he won't have to pack and ship, and there would be no eBay or Paypal fees, so it's a win for him too.
