Hi folks, Do you have any experience with jaw crushers to reduce size of the rocks to be tumbled? I have a challenge now to process many lbs of 2-3" stones into chips 1/2 and a bit smaller. It is crazy to buy a machine for the occasional use. I'd rather rent one. But where..?

I don't know if this is useful but I had some success soaking some large cobbles for a few days in water then I cooked them in the BBQ pit for a while and ended up with some much more manageable material.

That's a good idea of water and a fire pit. You just need to be careful but you know that.
I was just thinking about that but maybe after the water soak freeze the rocks and let the ice do the job. It sure cracks the roads real good. Put them in Tupperware to keep the pieces of rocks in one place. Just a thought.

I keep the lid closed to avoid getting hit by fragments. I also have wrapped them in aluminum foil which so far has done a good job keeping all the pieces in one place. I also has the freezing idea but got yelled at for putting rocks in the freezer. I have been told that my rock activities will be limited to the garage and outside.

I've been breaking up quartz on the back corner of my patio cement slab But this is fairly hard on the cement and is starting to wear a depression in it. I remembered that I have a railroad track baseplate that I can use as an anvil and backup plate for the rocks being pounded. Won't get to try it out for a coupla weeks though because I have already busted up all the Rough that I have right now.
