Here she is all blown up. I think she is just a bunch of lichen and other debris. Sigh! What an optical illusion! I'll check the nest after the two hummingbird babies fly. fullsizeoutput_15ad by Pat, on Flickr

Interesting thread. Seems like you figured it out with the bat-like debris. I was sort of hoping it was a new species like Mel said so you could call it a Bummer...lol.

Will be interesting to see the nest afterwards! Probably some dried brown leaves?

Went to check on our two babies this morning, half expecting them to be gone. They were gone. A little bit sad.
I tipped the nest so I could see inside completely. Empty. No baby bat bones; not even any bird poop. Poop only on all the surrounding avocado leaves. Could not really check on the debris-that-looks-like-a-baby-bat. The birds reduced the size of the nest from the top as they grew bigger, so they could fit in it. It's been rather tight the last few days.
While just staring at the empty nest, something appeared out of the corner of my eye. A baby hummingbird! : ) He looked like he was doing a fine job of flying. Hope I see him again. It's been fun. I appreciate all the information and comments.

Seems wrong to 'like'... thanks for posting. It is always good to spread knowledge and awareness. These things can be devastating, but there will always be a few that will survive and these will go on to form the basis of the stronger populations of the future.
