I searched the 130 pages of this specimen photo subgroup and was surprised to see very few photos of Ocean Jasper. Maybe I'm just crappy at searching, but since OJ is one of my favorite materials, I thought some pics were in order. About 10-12 years ago I was actively buying chunks and slabs of OJ on ebay, for those two years I must have at least watched every auction for OJ rough, bid on the ones I liked, and won enough of them to collect a good variety of Ocean Jasper. A small amount of what I bought was broken up for tumbling (and posted on this board), but the vast majority remains as faced-pieces and slabs that I have on display but still have not yet polished the faces. I have renewed interest in polishing up some of these pieces to enhance their display quality, but still have not decided on the best way to go about that. One nice thing about good OJ is that it displays quite well even when not polished. All but one of the pics shown here were taken with the OJ wet, to better show what it might look like when polished. One piece is shown dry, since it was face-polished when I bought it. I might as well start off with my one polished piece: Everything else is not polished, but was photographed wet. Same as above, different angle: One of my fave slabs, this is a thick one, weighs about a pound. So called "early-dig" OJ: More first dig, a four-pound faced chunk: This early-dig piece was sacrificed for tumbling... But this 6.5 lb chunk of early-dig is alive and well. These next two pics (3 slabs) are from early 2008... the quality of OJ on ebay was starting to slip by then, but I bought them because it was different than the earlier stuff and still solid, and I wanted to have examples of all kind of OJ. If you've read this far then you must be an OJ fan, so I hope you enjoyed the show! -Don

I wish I had your forsight, I was going to Tucson every year about that time and remember it well. My pocket book at the time was rather thin and I kept saying next year. Well next year never came and I think I ended up with a pound bag of tumbles. I really like what you have collected, I'm impressed.

Your older stuff is off the charts. Wow! I had no idea it could be that cool. Where can it be found? I really don't know anything about the material. Is it a limited supply?

Man oh man, gorgeous pics! I wish I had bought more way back when but I only have a few slabs. Saw the early dig stuff when it first hit Q. Was $15 per pound even back then. Wish I'd bought a hundred pounds of rough. Would have outperformed my stocks *L*....Mel

Wow drool alert right there! Very interesting seeing the different varieties next to each other like that. Wish I had been buying rocks back then! Great job grabbing them when you did.

We must have been buying from the same supplier. I have a stash of "old-time" OJ slabs and a lot of them have nearly identical patterns to those you posted. Love that stuff!
I've learned from experience that when a fine new cutting material appears on the market it's wise to buy as much as you can afford while it's still available. There are exceptions -- some materials have a long sales life -- but how I wish I'd been able to afford a stock of many of the fine agates/jaspers that appeared on the market years ago and are now history. I look back on old issues of LapJournal and grow sad at missed opportunities. But those were the days when it was a struggle to pay the rent and buy groceries. I had the foresight but not the cash.

Amazing. I had a shot at buying some 5-6 years ago and passed on price. I'm an Id10t jeannie and I see this one looks like a science experiment using ham as a culture media.
