OK maybe this *one* change wont draw complaints but I ain't holding my breath You should now have pagination numbers at the bottom of every thread - just above the QuickReply box. 'You're welcome' ... to everyone who asked me to look into doing this. To go along with this I set the display number of posts per page to 20 (was 15). The theory is having less page calls from the database is faster to get around for everyone including slow connections. If either of these two improvements are found to be having the opposite effect and causing trouble for anyone please contact me and tell me your first-hand account.

And page numbers can also be found at the bottom of each forum list of threads...

Nice, Tommy . I always hated that miniscule movement of scrolling the page back toward the top to get the page numbers to show up. Much better. In terms of posts, that's good for me as well. I hadn't done it here yet, but I typically call for more posts in a page than is set by default. The less keystrokes/clicks the better. Thanks for the work. Dave

WHAT? This just messes up my entire visiting experience. Man, way to ruin a perfect website.
Um, yeah. Right.
What I meant to say is thank you for taking over and making some changes. I've run a few message boards before and it's tough to make updates. But I appreciate the time and effort you're putting into making this site better each and every day! And a big THANK YOU for adding numbers to the bottom of a page.

So glad to see page numbers at the bottom!
Is it possible to number the posts in each thread? Thanks.

So glad to see page numbers at the bottom! Is it possible to number the posts in each thread? Thanks. Do you mean when looking at the list of threads - to show a unique number beside each one? Well since the posts are delivered from a database that has stored every posts the numbers would approaching six digits by now. I don't know of anything like this but I'll make some inquiries.

No, not what I mean. I mean if each post in each individual thread could have a number.
As it is now, I can note that what I want to remember or copy is on page x. Because some posts are very long, it would be handy if I knew it was post 23 and shows on page 56.

OH, I got you. I don't think a new pagination can occur in a thread like you are describing but I will check into it. Every post has a number known by the database - but it's a global number. There have been upwards of a million posts recorded by the database so the next post made will be a six digit number and it will cross reference to the thread number in the database.

I mean the first post in a thread would be 1. Second post 2 etc

Tommy, after seeing Pat's question, I went nosing around the Proboards site looking at forums. The closest thing that I found was a forum where the original post is not numbered, but the subsequent posts in the thread were "reply #1, "reply #2," etc. Those labels were in the header of the post where it shows when the post was written. That's not quite was Pat was asking for, but it's close. Dave

Is that right?

Is that right? If that's what you're looking to do with them, that would work. In long threads, it's also assists in referring someone to a particular post. In such a case, if this was instituted here, you could tell that person to go back to reply #whatever if something was already addressed in the thread and you wanted that person to see it. Dave

It's a 'mod' not a plug-in so it will have to be installed on all four templates here.

Thank you so much, Tommy. Something I have wanted for a long time.
As for numbering posts - If you want to point someone to a post, why not just get the link for it? At the top right of every post, to the right of the "thumbs up," is a little gear thingy. Hover over it, and it will say "post options." Now left click it, and click "link to post." It then gives you two choices, "Link to this post in this thread:" and "Link to only this post:" Choose which one you want, and make a link like any other URL. Unless I'm missing something, this seems so much easier than referring someone to a post number.
Ha ha, actually, I just wanted to try out a new emoticon. Lovely, Thanks, Tommy!

Pat, if you click on the cog symbol just right of the "Like Hand" you can select just that post for whatever you want to do with it.

Pat - we took a look at the page numbers modification and it was really glitchy and not suitable for installation here. I'll keep my eye out for a more stable solution.
