It's been a long time since I slabbed anything. I wasn't sure where to start so I just grabbed something out of bucket. I don't know what it is, but I really like it. Any ideas? Andrea

Tree (dendritic) agate? Someone recently posted an image of something similar (referred to it as tree agate), and a Google image search produces similar results.

Bertrandite can come in those colors in addition to the purple and that's the way I'd lean. There's also a rose form of amethyst sage that looks like that. The Bertrandite is more opalized and the other more agatized. The" Tree agate" refers to the black dendrites included in the material, Dendritic means having branching treelike inclusions. Many agate and jasper types have dendrites..Mel

Thanks Mel. That's why I put a question mark at end of my "guess." In no way am I close to knowing anything...and I can prove it. Gotta keep looking at these threads and pictures and trying to soak in what I can. Dave

Thanks guys. When I bought the piece I thought it looked like it could be amethyst sage but there was no purple. I didn't know there was a rose version.....cool. I'll look up Bertrandite and compare.

Can you post a picture of the rough side of the stone? I was thinking Tiffany too and it has a pretty distinctive rough look.

That does look like Tiffany, but with unusually strong dendrites and unusually little healed fractures/brecciation. I'm about 50/50 between Tiffany and dendritic opal of some sort.

Betrandite and Tiffany Stone are synonyms. Another incidence of common name confusion. I thought Betrandite too but am leaning more towards Rose ammey sage after seeing that last rough cut pic....Mel

I'm with the rose sage. Not as dendritic but sure looks like it.

This material is amythst sage from Tony. It runs the color Gambit from tans, translucent amythst, to the rose color. Nice material from Tony! catmandewe

I thought Betrandite too but am leaning more towards Rose ammey sage after seeing that last rough cut pic....Mel Well, I actually learned something in this thread. I happened to go to our club's show today, and I spent some time looking at the different display cases. As it happens, and surely as a result of this thread, a specimen slab happened to catch my attention. Without this thread it would have simply been another piece of rock. The slab, which is the spitting image of the subject of this thread was labeled amethyst sage. I wasn't smart enough to take a picture, but coloration and dendritic features were identical. If the show was last weekend, I'd have probably walked right on by. Not so today. Good call Mel. Dave

It sure looks like Amethyst sage to me, especially with the rind picture. The name denotes that there is purple in every piece but actually only about 5-10% of it has any purple, but there sure are lots of other colors in it. One of my favorite things to cut! Tony
