Dang!! When I first saw the grit encrusted Roach my first thought was that it was some new armored variety!!
I pretty sure that armored roaches are one of the 7 signs!!

Did your experiment run longer than you had planned? I only ask because it happens to me all of the time! ;-)

The AO polish barrel finished up wonderfully 5 days ago on Tuesday. Had to go to South Carolina for a week. The 4-stage batch has been running unattended in polish during that time. I will look at it this evening when I get back home to Alabama. Pictures Soon ...

Finally, I have some pictures and opinions about my dual barrel polish experiment using the 3 step A0-80 process and the normal 4 step SiC process. Ran each Batch for 6 days in polish and washed them for an hour with a few drops of Dawn Dish soap, then a super rinse ending with filtered water. The same separate Polish Barrel and the same polish and beads were used for both batches. I want to point out that I have only been tumbling for 6 months and this is the first time that I have tried to polish rocks in a 6 pound barrel so I may have issues with my methods. The 3-step AO-8O method worked the best and produced some very shiny results, the glass had a very hazy shine. Shown in these 3 photos . . . GroupPetrified WoodQuartzThe Normal 4-step process had a very Matt Shine but Noticeable. I believe that the SiC 220 & 600 stages Reduce the rock more than the AO-80 and the polish barrel for the 4-stage process was notably less full and had more smaller stones in it. The Glass looked fairly beat up and frosted. Here are 3 pictures from the 4-step batch . . . GroupPetrified WoodQuartzSo I had enough material to start another 6 pound barrel rolling into the polish stages. Because of the shiner results and a simpler system I decided to use the 3-step AO-80 method to polish them. The barrel will be filled fuller and there will be more plastic beads to cushion the final stage, also plan to Reroll everything in polish to try and pull out a better shine from the rocks that were in both processes.

Thanks for trying this in a fairly scientific way. I wonder if the reason not everything came out shiny could be grit from previous stages getting stuck in the pits/cracks and then scratching things up doing the polish --?

I found an olive in a martini once. grin Mostly in the washing machine is found money that a batchelor doesn't clean out of his pockets very well. If I were married there wouldn't be any money.hehhehe

Glad you had some success with the AO 80 Woofer. I use it in the vibe for the most part. 2-4 days and done, move to polish.
However, if you don't want to fool with the rotary for 2-3 weeks say for a vacation or a sabbatical after coarse grind, set it rolling with AO 80 for 2-3 weeks. It will take your rocks thru several grit stages without having to do any maintenance. The longer it rolls the closer you get to polish step. Sometimes I add coarse grit every day. Get sick of the hassle. Ready for a break, so a 2-3 week no hassle run with the AO 80 is enlightening.

Glad you had some success with the AO 80 Woofer. It's not just "some success", it's excellent. I don't question the processes at all but I do question My polish methods in the 6 pound barrel. I feel the polish barrels were not filled enough and not enough plastic pellets in the mix. Planning to repolish all of the material in this experiment after I get more plastic in the mail using a fuller barrel.
