melhill1659 You will be happy to know that the sluices are heavily salted aside from garnets and staurolite. It has bee a racket for many years in the sapphire and ruby sluices found in the Appalachians. The rubies and sapphires probably out of India lol. Next time you pass thru Atlanta you should stop by the Hogg Mine. They may open it Sat/Sun. It is a world class rose quartz mine in LaGrange Georgia not far from you path home. It is a massive vein of rose quartz the surfaces in several places in that 3 mile circle. Some of it is star rose quartz. About all of it is fine. it was a beryl mine, the military mined giant beryl crystals for making the metal beryllium. Visited it 30-40 years ago and used to fill many 5 gallon buckets of no fracture rose quartz. www.hoggmine.com/news.htmlI'm more into agates. Coral too. Like the color.

jamespI was happy that they were salted. After a week of heavy hiking, digging, wading through swift cold creeks to NOT find any colorful agates, jaspers, pet wood etc... it was a very welcomed change 😂 The country side is most beautiful!! I have read about the Hogg Mine and want to go. At this time I have 3 more classes scheduled. An I'm quite excited about them and trying to perfect some of the aspects of the trade ( Silversmithing and two cabbing classes ). Oh and getting to stop in and visit friends like you an Ann along the way!

Oh and getting to stop in and visit friends like you an Ann along the way! The social aspect is some of the best times. Carried all walks of people rock hunting over many years. Best trips. It is a problem with coral hunting because boat/kayak/canoe is a minimum requirement. I am forced to go alone on many occasions, plus it requires overnight for 2-3 days. Me and captbob had a great trip to the Rio. Not many can pack up and go for a week or two at a time. Plus 1200 miles each way. I often go coral hunting with 3 other friends, they are kayak fisherman. I collect coral while they fish. The Hogg mine is a bit depleted since the days I used to go there. The roads were paved in cab grade rose quartz gravel back then. If you turn right at Smith's Crossroads there is another rose quartz exposure on the road right of way about a half mile down. Probably posted now. gas station on NE corner is full of quartz crystals in grade cut. That whole area is full of cool quartz. You need to hit Lake Falcon on a boat, hit the shores during low water. That's your agate hole. Still a long haul from Mississippi though. And may be dangerous at times due to trafficking.

South Texas, on the Rio Grande. Lake is shared with Mexico, has been a hotbed for drug smuggling.
Prime agate collecting.

I'll wear my cap, baggy hunting clothes and combat boots. They'll just think I'm a short Mexican man they speaks very broken Spanish! I do tan rather well.

I know the lake is a bad place to cross for the bad guys. It is wide. It is the narrow sections of the rio during dry season that is certainly risky. I have spent 13, 4, and 19 days there on 3 different trips and never noticed any funky behavior. A fair amount of people live on it. You would think they would have big problems -OR- they are assisting lol. I stomped around on the Rio up around Brewster county when the river was 20 feet wide with tall brush. No thanks, your a sitting duck up that way. Yes, you could dye hair gothic black and get a bunch of tattoos, just cover your body well. They would know in a hurry you ain't no man. The place is an agate/wood/jasper rush.

But any rock hunter would be mesmerized by the Rio. And us easterners need to be aware that the south easterly flowing Rio stole many agates from the west and deposited them close to us. Perhaps a gift to the east.

DH loves to fill the truck with pretties on our trips, I love bacon, chocolate and making sure DH knows I appreciate his willingness to rockhound with me! Its a win-win! Sure did enjoy meeting up with you and Christy on Saturday. Paul and I laughed again about the VM/Text he sent you. He didn't know my phone was set to send voice text. I was driving and he was sending the text and was just goofing around thinking it was set to voice recognition, not voice send. I told him you were going to think I was married to Bobcat Goldwait. And sorry again that the brunch choice was a bust. Next time we do need to get a group shot. You know people on this board, no pictures - didn't happen.

fantastic5Ann we laughed our butts off several times over that voice text. It was hilarious!! The Brunch Choice was awesome! Easy to get to, great coffee&biscuits, free covered parking to look at the rocks and most of all FABULOUS COMPANY!! Everything worked out great. We'll be coming back during the week of July 14th-23rd. This time I'm making more time to visit You and Jim ( jamesp)!

I'll keep my eye out for recent construction. Atlanta is always being dug up. You guys like to hunt arrowheads ? That is one thing we do have.

jamesp So far I've found 2 scrapers, but I am 0 for thousands of arrowhead possibilities. Finding my own, unsalted, arrowhead is a big dream of mine! I say 'unsalted' because a friend of mine placed one for me to find. Too obvious the way it was laying. Years ago on the outer banks, I walked right over a large spear point looking for shells. My husbands friend right behind me picked it up. He later lost it in Chattanooga mowing lawns.

The arrowhead situation also requires some timing, a clearing and rain. Without rain your goose is cooked. Often they clear, and then deep grade before the rain hits destroying the site. Artifacts always in the top 12 inches of soil, deep grade just covers them up. Typical arrowhead trip around Atlanta, they are not always show stopper arrowheads like you find in flint/chert territory. www.flickr.com/photos/67205364@N06/sets/72157658341807963
