What Scott said, totally different piece, different materials, different size. Possibly still done by the same brothers. The one now residing in Newberry Springs was also exhibited at the Vancouver Sculpture Biennale in late 2009, where it caused an uproar. As for it being sliced up, no. It was made that way: May be, but definitely not different materials. As I said, the photo I found is a bad representation - the piece I saw was chrome-plated and the surface didn't have a grainy, stone-like texture the photo appears to show and looked very much like the more recent piece. I remember the 10' exhibition head as being mirror-like and that's how it is described in old press clippings. There's a long tradition of repurposing older sculptures in newer works, so I still think it is possible that it was picked up for scrap prices and adapted. Things like those squared-off ear ridges are oddly similar.

See jasoninhollywood.blogspot.com Don't know the history of the statue, but it gets around. Let me help since the generic reference doesn't point to the intended article... Not much info, but it describes the sculpture HEREConsdidering the subject, I'm all for it being in the desert. Better yet, scrapped. Why a communist was on display is beyond me. Dave A lot of our fellow citizens would rather be subject to leadership than provide for themselves. That's why

Things like those squared-off ear ridges are oddly similar. Y'all have got me researching this now, lol. If you say the head at Expo 74 World's Fair in Spokane was shiny chrome, I believe you. You saw it, I did not. I have been searching for more photos of the bust, but seems there are only about three of them out there. And none seem to show the reflectiveness as the photo Scott posted. There is not much info on the bust, no surprise, we're talking about the Soviets here. No one seems to know what happened to that bust after the Expo. Don't know if it went back to Russia, or is in a museum (doubtful), or, more likely, a private collector has it somewhere.
Here is one showing the head and pedestal it sat on.
Without anything to judge scale by (a person standing next to it, perhaps), it appears larger than it really is. One of the references said, "All told, the bust of Lenin stood 10 feet high." Unless I'm not fully comprehending this, that sounds to me like the head and pedestal together are ten feet tall, or about five foot tall each (give or take). I don't see how a five foot tall bust can be repurposed into a statue 20 feet tall.
More on the Expo You've seen the head, here is the 60 X 30 foot, 4500 pound aluminum relief map of the USSR, outside the Pavillion
Seems the Russians like everything BIG.
Will await more information. Scott @shotgunner, have you Googled the address where it is currently located, see if it is just a residence or if there is a business operating there?

rockpickerforeverI have not googled the address. My customer was around the corner from the head. I was looking for property for sale and found the head on the next property. No way it's the same head as the world's fair. The facial hair is completely different. My example was produced for that fair in BC by the Gao brothers well after the world's fair example. This one has moved around a bit finding time in Los Angeles and now deep in the Mojave. Currently the top piece is not in place. Perhaps being re-polished or lost forever.

In this case, as you stated, there's a mass who looks to be provided for instead of being proactive. No surprised this turned up in Los Angeles proper. Dave

And hopefully I learn why Newberry Springs! That will certainly be interesting. I'm hoping you find out he's a scrap metal dealer who hasn't had a chance to deal with this yet. Dave

Not likely. But he may have a plan to deface it.
