At least three clients in widespread areas of that town have said so. Strangely, none of those folks are familiar with GHO main diet. Skunks. I wonder if those folks stay in at night or GHO eat something else there? Or they misidentified the owls?

Beautiful owls. I have had a nesting family of great horned Owls for years. A grove of cottonwoods beside a large prairie dog colony and a river,.

Cool photo's of the owls, some years ago my wife and I where taking a late night ride in a place called phantom canyon about 10 min. Into it what I think was a great horned owl swooped From over the cab of my truck and flew steady right in front of us. With a wing span about as wide as my truck it was huge. Freaked my wife out so bad I had to turn around, not before I turned the lights out and yelled its coming for us.she was mad at me forever.

Thanks all. We have an abundance of barnies in Davis, and they come out early enough for pics. I hear the GHO's as well, but it's generally too dark for pics when they are flying.
@ Gem'n I: all pics were taken in various locations in Davis, CA.

Wonderful photos! I hired a young man to take me around and find owls in Minnesota a couple years ago. Here is a video we made of a Great Gray Owl in the snow. Sorry about all the people talking on the video, a lot of different birders arrived at about the same time to see this very cooperative owl.

Sweet pics, Stephan. Owls are cool critters. Had GHO's in the woods out back. Got to watch the little one grow up and leave the nest.

Good job on the wife letting you have that queen size all by your self. You seeing the benefits of sleeping alone?? Phantom canyon still a long, dry and dusty road Frank? Different country in that place. Did you go up the hill to gamble or just out driving around? Haven't been through that canyon for a few years. A unique wild geranium grows there.

Yep, You can always tell a GHO's nest by the skunk smell. GHO's can be pretty sweet when you get them used to being handled but they can be pretty dangerous when pissed too. We put a hack board into one of our flights so we could have one of our ambassador birds have a nest and foster babies. Wow, what a difference, man that bird defended her nest site like a warrior. Used to have to show extreme care when entering the flight and even them she'd get you now and then. I can attest to the fact having a set of those talons stuck in you is a very unpleasant experience....Mel

Those talons. Glad I never experienced those. Was very aware of them when deciding how close to get. Think she was aware of me behind her? Thank goodness for long lenses. Look at the size of those daggers!

yup pretty much the same ol' road, no gambling ,only gamble I make is thinking if I have enough gas to make it around another bend! We used to drive for days some times just wondering taking it all in back when it was just the 2 of us, we been together bout 22 years now, we met when we where 16 ,and cliff she gets the king to herself. I let her be queen of her castle and I'm just her humble jester.

GHO's have long talons and a really powerful grip. We had Eagle gauntlets but never used them for GHO's even though we really should have. I've had talons sunk into my back through an undershirt, thick levis shirt and jacket and had them penetrate a regular gauntlet with ease. Worst is when they step off the gauntlet and get you in your bare arm. They like to tighten down real slow and have a locking mechanism for their talons so you cannot pull them off. You just have to grin and bear it till they let go. Enough to make a grown man cry and something that "sticks" in your memory. There is another owl that a fellow brought one of our shows one time, the Eurasian Eagle Owl that looks a lot like a GHO except even bigger. That big ole gal was freaking awesome but I would not like to get footed by one.
Those extra vertebrae for rotating the neck are cool too. When we'd give them vet care, you'd hold them against your chest and hold both legs to control the feet. You'd have to put a leather pad on your chest or else they'd rotate their head and bite the poop out of your chest. Owls of all sorts can really bite hard!.....Mel

That big ole gal was freaking awesome but I would not like to get footed by one. I held an Eurasian Eagle Owl in South Africa that was a rescue bird that posed with people for photographs but I have to admit I waited to see how the bird did with other people before I took my turn! They ARE huge. It's easy to find the pic online of me with a Barn Owl but I'll have to look around and see if I still have the photo with the Eurasian Eagle-Owl.
