forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/76605/black-widowThey are all over my office too, Mike. Catch a couple every year. I can take a pic of some fresh egg sacs...when I finish my Florida vacation. Looks like I will be trying some Demon brand insecticide when I get back.

Oh yeah, those nasties were rampant in Southern Commiefornia. Uncommon here but then we have wall to wall recluse spiders, bark scorpions and giant centipedes....Mel

Yikes! I understand the the red hourglass in the abdomen is how to ID a black widow. However, what does their backside look like? Don't normally see spiders belly up. Pat, most that I've seen have some reds spots on the top of their abdomen. If you look closely at the 2nd pic you can barely see it above the spinneret. Getting a little close and personal with a widow aren't you Mike? Send me a rock and wont tell your wife... or girlfriend either. grin

Just Google 'shark bite capital of the world'. Been playing the odds here for 30+ years. Can move the needle more to your favor if you are observant. Bait fish jumping, time for lunch. Don't wear your bedazzled cut-off jeans while swimming either, Cliff. Looks too much like fish scales.

woo Mike From the time as shown on the hour glass, I say its time to whack the black widows. Don't kill spiders and other creepy crawlers but the Black Widow is too dangerous to have trotting around. Especially those huge one. Nice Haul !! I actually reverse my policy for the widows I catch. For some odd reason, I respect them more, or they are more interesting or something. I kill all other spiders indoors, but the black widows I find in the office get relocated deep in the woods behind my house. Or more accurately, behind someone else's house.

Enjoy and don't get too sunburned.

Then may I suggest you invoke the 'tuck rule' when swimming in these waters?

Here is Tennessee the black widows that I find are always top side up. But they are such a glossy black that they are unmistakable. They seem to love to make their nests in my rock piles. Have to be careful whenever I go out to admire my hoard collection. MrMike, that is a BIG girl. Great pictures too. Never knew about the spiky egg sacs. Great information to have.

Up north , we miss out on all those cool (not) critters . Like the nasty spiders , poison snakes , gators , but we pay for it with the snow and cold that keeps us free from vermin like that .
