The comet that impacted Jupiter was Shoemaker-Levy 9, not Hale-Bopp. That was impressive -- and scary -- since objects that size have hit the Earth in the past and inevitably will again. It's all a matter of when. We dodged a couple of fairly large asteroids quite recently. Neither was spotted in advance. Shoemaker levy 9 almost bankrupted the entire American telescope industry. Tens of thousands of aholes ordered, bought, used for one day and returned some very high end scopes. I own one of those now. Need to start using it again. Someday....
