Mel, the shed really sounds like a good idea. If you go to Home Depot or Lowes, I think they can even put it together for you- for a price. I agree that it's a good idea to separate the cutting and cabbing business. Then, you could take as long as you wanted to build the addition. You could go all out like meviva did. The standard sheds sold by our local home depot aren't very attractive nor big. We have a couple local shed companies that do custom sheds to any size you want and are willing to pay the price for. They can also match design elements of the other buildings on the property.
My local Lowes also has the big wooden custom sheds and the smaller metal units up to 10x12, maybe bigger.

That's a wow piece right there! Ok I am tempted! So where abouts in that huge state could you stroll upon said Agates? That's a Reyes agate there. Across the Rio Grande in Mexico from the Texas hot spots. The Texas ranches in the Big Bend area are the hot spots. Singleton Ranch is where hank and Jeremy did the 20 bucket massacre last year. Check out Terri Smith rock hunts . Her hubby is having health problems this years so she may not do hunts but maybe. Also the larremore ranch., Jean might do some agate hunts on her ranch. The Stillwell ranch down along the border is always open and very collectable. Marfa Texas, Alpine Texas etc are all great agate country. Once it cools down and the snakes go to bed. grin.

Thanks!!! I just looked at the link. I book marked it!

Tumblers do deserve a place to themselves. Or you deserve a shop away from them. Nagging noise not good for man nor beast. Not to mention how messy they can be.

Thanks!!! I just looked at the link. I book marked it! Teri Smith will get you in the best spots and get discounts on what you collect. Safe, knows all the ranchers, fun groups. She is the way to go in west Texas. Rent at the little motel/cabin place. Quaint spot, has collected rocks all over the property. Cheap and cool spot, little cabins probably built in the 50's.

I spent the day cleaning our utility room in our unattached garage. This is the left side and pretty much the entire room looked liked this! Could barely open the doors to pull out my table saw. This is my new space A woman in the junk room with an empty garbage is the stuff of guys' nightmares!

Thanks Tela, That's kinda what we did for the building I have now. It's a 16x20. They built and delivered it right to my house. Who would have thought it would get so small so quick! I'm with jamesp , I love my cozy, everything almost within reach space! Con is a Go Big or Go Home kind of person an it has to fit in aesthetically with the landscape. Regardless of what we do I'll keep my "clean" area in that small building. I love it in there! The other will be a real workshop! It'll house my Tumblers, a large utility sink, my big saw, new rock saws, rock storage, all of my power tools and wood working tools. I have a lot of those! My sis is coming over today to help move my Tumblers to there new spot and put up the insulation. Your husband sounds like mine. We moved to this house so we could build a garage for his cars. In the back is my rock room, it's 10x25, and has its own entrance. He is talking about building another garage, I'm not sure how serious he is about that, but if he is I'll try and add another area for me. Right now I do my wrapping in the kitchen but I think I'm going to set up another desk in my office just for that.

Hey, I built all kind of shop space. My wife took it over by eminent domain(actually prescriptive easement). I do most of my work under the sun. Or in a greenhouse. Takeover was inch by inch. As I slowed down on a project and created space she over took the space created. Say I mow your property corner for 7 years...the law of 'prescriptive rights' takes over(here in Georgia). I will have serious claim to your property corner. If you allow me to fence said property corner, it is about impossible for you to claim ownership after 7 years. "prescriptive easement: n. an easement upon another's real property acquired by continued use without permission of the owner for a period provided by state law to establish the easement. The problems with prescriptive easements are that they do not show up on title reports, and the exact location and/or use of the easement is not always clear and occasionally moves by practice or erosion. (See: prescription, easement)" Uh, special emphasis on "exact location and/or use of the easement is not always clear". Right up a lady's alley.... Just letting you know some tactics melhill1659My north neighbor fenced 9 of his 13 acres 30 years ago. He did not know his property line. He still does not know I have been using his 4 acres. I don't have the heart to take his 4 acres if and when he figures it out. I even built a shed on it. He is welcome to it. So this 'kind' mentality is the same mentality I use on my wife. I'd rather fight a court battle than fight my wife on shop space any day. Men are pushovers for this kind of spousal aggression. a man can't possibly argue with a woman wearing a tool belt, no way.

Wife's last restaurant project, twenty 30 inch wok lights in recessed ceiling. Neptune Beach Florida. She does produce stuff. Stolen space justified...

Thanks for the short lesson on GA Land Law. My new space is working out great! As soon as I can sell my big boat (she takes up a double bay!!! I'll have plenty of new rock shop space.

Why are your tumblers backwards?

captbob The Blue tumbler itself is heavier than the red one. The Red base, although slower, is made better and stronger. In order to get and keep the higher rpm speed oh the Blue base I had to switch buckets.

I didn't say switched around, I asked why they are backwards.

Since this is my thread and this does fit into the "Rock shop" stuff, I have a question... captbob, jamesp, @shotgunner, 1dave, coloradocliff, and of course anyone else that wants to chime in (unless it's to tell me not to do it cause then you'll be waisting your time) INSTEAD OF THE OLD SCHOOL HEAVY ASS LONG SLEDGE HAMMER for busting open/beating into rocks in the field, wouldn't a Dewalt hammer drill with various bits-chisels-rock pick be more efficient AND save more material??? Inquiring spastic mind would like opinions!

In the field? You mean while out rockhounding or some field behind your house?
I just prefer my tumblers with motors on the front side so that -
1. I can see them and the belts to eyeball operation 2. maybe better airflow 3. get to the pulley to clean (with q-tips) any oil out of pullies and off belt (frequently do that) 4. maybe it's just a guy thing

"in the field"?
Power tools not allowed.
Maybe you didn't see me. While in Holt Cyn I found 150#+ boulder of Holt Cyn lace agate. No way in the world are we carrying that behemoth 200 vertical feet to the truck. I noticed it had natural fractures. So, I exploited them. With 5# hammer and pointed chisel, I spent 15 minutes breaking it down into manageable pieces.
Still, I barely had the energy to do the last 20# piece.
