See how far you are from there Mike. If you can drive it bet Radio would sell his bargain to you reasonably . radio , you planning on selling this saw? Probably will after I get it cleaned up a bit and evaluate it. I have a 12 inch and I don't need anything larger. Where you located in Tennessee?

Ironically I too picked up at 14/16" Highland Park Saw this weekend, but I did not get the bargain price that you did. It was sans a top, and sans a motor and understandably needs a blade. I have disassembled it totally to remove some superficial rust and adjust the rollers on the vice. I'm impressed as heck at the ease of servicing the machine and the total availability of parts (even if the new ones come from China). Anyone with a 1/2" socket can do everything but remove the blade. The operating manuals available for these saws from Highland Park's website are also a great resource. I'm not selling mine - it will supplement my little 12" slab saw as a 16" once it gets its new blade and top. BTW mine is labeled a B12 model which I've always seen as a B12 arbor/10" saw combo and never as a slab saw. The description of the J model saws in one of the Cigarbox lapidary pdf matches my saw but the tank dimensions are indeed different; so Highland Park played with dimensions a bit through the years. I had been searching for sometime and eventually was rewarded with a decently priced fixerupper within driving distance.

Old motors were much larger physically than the motors today. Also ran forever instead of through the warranty period (if you are lucky).

Repairable and we had people who would gladly repair them back in the day. Going to be in Denver for the show John? Will be there if my knee lets me.

Got the beast home! Drained the oil and removed the HUGE motor which made it much easier to deal with. I pulled my tilt bed trailer down this morning and managed to back it within 20 feet or so from the shed the saw was living in. I rubbed some grease off the motor and was amazed to find it is rated at 1/2 hp! As @johnsgems said, the oldies were bigger than their newer counterparts, but this thing is a monster! Guess my eys deceived me when I thought it weighed 150 pounds, but it will go 75 or more for sure!
The blade shaft has a bit of up and down play, so I will need to replace the two pillow blocks and bearings, but that looks simple enough once I give everything a good low pressure power washing with some grease cutter. The vise moves smoothly on the rails without any play which is good because I wasn't looking forward to rebuilding the carriage!

One problem with older motors is the frequent lack of thermal overloads. I watched most of my dad's old motors smoke when I tried to use them and they overloaded. On a slab saw where you can start it and go away and leave it unattended an automatic or manual reset overload would be advisable. A used or new motor costs less than a garage generally. Motor should indicate if it is thermally protected.

Yes, Cliff, we will be in tent 9 outside the Coliseum. With the construction and show expanding into the facility across the street we may be pretty lonesome out there.
