2017 Fun Cab Challenge This is a challenge to yourself... What is the best cab that you can create... posting the results of your creation whatever the outcome (just because the cab may not be the best please post anyway and if you like ask for feedback to improve). Theme: chosen by prior month's winner Rockoonz : Chatoyant or flashy materials where light in a direction shows color-play, materials may include tiger eye, opal, iris agate, labradorite, some malachite, serpintine, obsidian, and other types.Rules: New Rule: Please include an object in your photo so i may properly size the photos to real size (fingers, or coins work) Thanks for the help All hand made cabbing techniques may be used. Cabs entered must be hand shaped (can be finished in a tumbler) and be completed by the last minute of the month in your timezone. They can be started before the month but only finished during the month. You must have 1 photo of ether a preform or slab of the rock. You can enter up to 3 individual finished piece (not combined) photos and 1 of the 3 photos will be used for voting to see what cab folks like the most (please note the photo you want used). You can change your photos or improve your cab and place new photos in your original post replacing old photos by the deadline. Finished jewelry cabs may not be entered (unless otherwise specified by the theme). It is OK if there is a hole drilled in the cab without a jump ring, as long as there is no extras on the rock (wire, chord, etc.) All entries submitted to this contest must be unique to this competition (not submitted in several different competitions). Any duplicates will not be included in the voting list. Feel free to share with us the story behind your workings or material. Also, don't forget to include the name of the material. If a tie occurs in the voting the breaker will be whoever submitted the finished item first. If there are any questions feel free to ask. Beginners to old timers are welcome. If you would like feedback (constructive criticism) ask for folks to pm you if they wish to offer tips. If you are new and think your cab isn't too good but its the best you can do post it anyway, getting feedback is how i got to where i am now! Prize : winner is allowed to chose theme for the month following voting, no physical prize yet.

"Chatoyant or flashy materials where light in a direction shows color-play"
Right up my wheelhouse, but then remembered that Fire Agate does not count.......
So, will have to look around what kind of Spectrolite I still got laying around somewhere, As I pretty much have exhausted my remains of Pietersite.....

I would love to see a big, flashy Labradorite cab. Moonstone would be cool as well.

OK, lets start that thing. Spectrolite from Ylämaa option 1 by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Lets see where this takes me. If it does not work out, I found a few broken pieces from past attempts with colours more to my taste;just have to re-cut them all over again...... option 2 by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Best regards, Kurt

How much is postage from the US to you Kurt? You got some spare? I'm more than willing to come up with postage. Had not had anything from mainland US in a while, but I think small boxes are about 25$.

Do the purple bottom right. LOVE IT!!!!! I'm a spectrolholic. I have a bunch of small preforms, but I have yet to gather the nerves to cab them. Not very nice, though, I'm afraid.

How much is postage from the US to you Kurt? It depends a lot on the total package weight. I ship a lot of cabs internationally through Etsy using USPS First Class int'l package/thick envelope and the cost is around $13usd up to 8 oz. If you go over 8oz the price jumps by a lot.

I was just going to suggest the same. Yeah, will be likely the one. Unfortunately I'm reminded why those broken fragments and cut offs where in the drawer. The colour is nice in most, but highly sensitive to angle. Hoped sanding will help some, but most remain one-angle wonders. The one on the right has some now, but rather limited from all four direction. but if I sand any more, I might start loosing colour. So, I'm increasing the grit now towards the finish line. It has the colours/patterns that I like, and besides the triangle, its the only one that allows viewing from more than one angle with full face colours. The only thing that bothers me personally though is that there are no colours head on. I have a bunch of small preforms, but I have yet to gather the nerves to cab them. Not very nice, though, I'm afraid. Like every material, Spectrolite is a learning curve. The only thing really to worry about, and hence different to other material is the dome. Make it as shallow as possible, or you might get a black rimmed cab. The viewing angle can be adjusted a little, but it all depends on how it was slabbed in the first place. At best, one ends up with colours from every angle, at worst its one single angle (I find material from Madagascar a bit better in this regard)..... But, thats the gamble...., so there is nothing else to do than to try and hope for the best.......

I'm hoping to one day to salvage at least a couple cabs. Most of the specs I have seen and own are flat tops. I'll just have to try that. Maybe even use the flat lap.

I'll just have to try that. Maybe even use the flat lap. You are doing mostly smaller cabs, so it should work out fine. The bigger you get, the harder alignment and colour gets. Basically, same as with Fire Agate.
