Altho I haven't had time to get my Quad out this year yet Getting all STROKED out and all and now this hobby bit me I thought I would show a couple past flights! I am wondering if a Quad could be used in finding some places to hunt for stones? I mean I can fly this thing a mile away and bring it back the whole time taking Video Footage of my flight. I also Collect Restore Wheel Horse Garden Tractors and took Video of a Friends Tractor Show. Too Damn many Hobbies I Guess. Anyways here are some YouTube Vids. Enjoy

You are kidding, right?
Lemme see. Walk miles and miles cracking rocks to see what they are.
Or
Cruise the quad miles and miles and more miles, cracking rocks finding the good stuff.
Nope.wont work. Quads suck for rockhounds. Specially if you have a small trailer behind. Never have extra capacity when rock hounding.

What a cool set of videos Rock. Love seeing the Lake and shore from the air. Bet lots of members like seeing the areas that they will never be able to get to because of time, money, or nor being physically able. Be a good thing that gyro to scout in places without doing all the walking, climbing and swimming to see if there is rock hounding potential. Like that some people are smart enough to be able to master all the mechanical aspects of technology instead of just talking about it. Thank you for the interesting videos.

Thanks Cliff, Some people look through a window and don't get to experience life in its true form. There are many ways to look at something I cant tell you can see that!

I think it is a great idea . Why put on the extra foot miles and time when you can get a birds eye on it . Lot of Lake Superior beaches change from good rocky pickins to worthless sand .

I'm a tactile rock hound. I can see an agate but until I hold it in my hand, I'm not sure how attractive it is. Smooth is one of the keys. Seeing from 20 ft up may be a good indication whether I should return on foot, but then I need the exercise anyway. I use a 200 cc trail bike to get into the field and good old shoe leather gets me closer and allows me to fill the bag. On another theme, I spent to many hours riding a tractor with a two bottom plow, I'm not ready to go back to a 1 bottom. You were going fast, but its still hard to see how far you've gone 20 minutes later. Now pushing snow, mowing lawn, or cultivating that might be fun.

Smarter way to find rocks. So many people cant get to all the areas to hunt so by looking before they walk two miles even obese people can find a few rocks. Course even with tech I will never find a rock.. Except for TheRock I always thought that " Black Beauty" was THE rock.. When you sending it back Rich, sometimes Dale, and always wigglinrocks ? I really miss it.. The picture of it don't really look good in my display case sitting all alone like that.

Yeah the scouting would save some ridge and hill climbing but have to hold it to really see if its a keeper. That little tractor goes like crazy, . Glad that I don't have to run a tractor in the nursery. Hard on the body all day.

You do know that his "Quad" is one of those flying drone things. His has a nice camera mounted on it and the videos were of the views from up there. Pretty cool. I would imagine that it would be kinda tough to hook a trailer up to one though ... Enjoyed the videos, thanks for sharing them with us! What is the range on one of those things? Note to those that haven't watched yet. Turn your volume down before you start the first one then adjust it as the video is playing. It's pretty loud at the get go.

Could be handy tossing it over the side of a cliff and checking it out with a good zoom lens. For float and under or near obstacles, trees etc... cant see that being much help? You going to miss a lot from that height.

My neighbor has a few of those drones (annoying as hell!) and can fly it down the street at a foot high. Stopping to hover over something interesting is no problem. Not the kinda thing I would take rockhounding as I like to cover the ground myself, but it could probably come in handy to see if it's worth traversing some rough terrain or going over that cliff. Be good if hounding in places you are not supposed to be as well. A heads-up to see if you are about to get busted!
Probably a fun hobby if you have the time and desire to get really good at operating such machines.

Not to hijack the thread, but this is half of the 'quad' that Scott had in mind. Its a great rock hound machine for the type of areas I collect in New Mexico. I sure wish I had had it in the Yellow Cat Mine area north of Moab. Of course one of those little tractors would pull a big load of rock for specialized extractions.

Thanks for sharing your other hobby...and the videos of your quad-flights. They are very cool, that's for sure. Sorry that the other folks didn't see the humor in your going rock hunting with your other hobby. It is a great hobby indeed, and one that I'm envious of, but with all MY hobbies, I'd have to find a 48 hour day and win the lottery...

Thanks All Captn Bob I haven't tried it myself but I have seen 5 mile Vids on YouTube. I was thinking for my purpose would be flying down a beach and you can see rocks vs sand in the surf. Once you bring it home you can play the video on a laptop and see what areas to return to. It has a built in GPS and many times has 13 to 15 Satellites locked on its position. I can see all kinds of uses for this kind of technology it tells GPS fix on the film if wanted and position from takeoff. all kinds of use full info. I like to think outside the box. Drones have been used in mapping areas to locate lost children and body recoveries that may not have been normally done with a $1,000.00 per hr helo.

No Problem on he HiJacking te thread thing but I can see more from 50 to 25 feet up than you can ever see on a quad. The State / County / and City beaches I go on and many other places those things are against the law. 1 warning is all ya get, after that you can see it sail off in the SunSet on a Tow Truck Or then you can argue with the Officer and get 3 Hots and a Cot.

I use it to get there (on the road) and then I walk. I've been known to have over 30lbs of rocks in the bags so it is an effective transport device. I'm sympathetic why they are not welcome on heavily used beaches. You should see the open space where the fit right in with minimal impacts.

A bunch of the places I go people are so full of $$ Money you wouldn't believe it. My wife and I were beachcombing were gone from our Car for 2 hrs and I got a $40.00 parking ticket. So we had to drive a few blocks and I showed them My Ole Sheriff Dept Id and they ripped up the ticket. They had a Pay Meter Like 600' down the beach but I thought since it was past labor day it was free. Well that's what I get for thinking! Besides didn't feel like walking that far after having a STROKE and all anyways. A Quad being one that fly's or one you ride on is like a tool. they all have their place and can help reap a better harvest of rocks if used correctly. Cheers ~Duke
