Your steel drum find was definitely better than mine.

Hello everyone. It has been awhile since I talked with the guy with the steel drums collection, how ever I spoke with him about a week ago. And he offered to sell me the drums of rock and a homemade rock saw. The material posted here is a sample of what I hand picked.there is lots of slabs and slablets .and the rocks are so dirty you really can't see what they are until you clean them off
So. My question is how much do I pay? I was trading for rocks with his son. His son told him if he needed the money to sell them to me. So I'm kinda in the middle now. To buy them or not. There maybe over 500lb.

Thanks for the update. From what you posted before, there should be some great materials there. I can't imagine what might be in them barrels? What I picked out was on the upper part of 1 of the barrels. And what I moved around in that barrel you can see some really great stuff. What would be a good offer to him?thank you.

$125 per barrel. If he doesn't like that price, you can always go higher. Gotta figure your time if you have to unpack them and go through to see exactly what you're getting.

There is 3 barrels smaller than the 50gal Size. 1milk create and the saw, I pretty much have to buy them as is without looking in them any further . I think it will be worth the gamble not to mention fun.

Really seems like a great opportunity. It also sounds like he doesn't want to part with them real bad. I would try not to start too low. He would be insulted. It's his collection, after all.

I've been thinking about this and my question I came up with is Where can you buy rocks like this at less than $1.00 a pound? And if it was yours what would you want for it?
Probably doesnt help much

I have followed one rule that has worked very well for me, let the seller dictate what's to be sold and the price. I never grab the rocks, let them point and say "let's look at those" or "pull out that crate". Having bought over 3 tons in the last 3 or 4 years using this rule it has allowed me to get some fantastic material at $1 per pound or less. Have also managed to bring home several hundred pounds for free, "just take those". I have occasionally paid more than that for a few selected pieces that I really wanted.
If you dealing with the original collector, remember that they put the effort into accumulating the material and in a most cases they still want to hold on to some of it. Someone grabbing rocks and then low-balling them is a sure way to get the door shut on you. Another advantage to cultivating a relationship is that you will will benefit from the transfer of knowledge as most of the folks I have found are more than willing to talk about the material and the trips to collect or purchase them.
There's also a big advantage to buying rocks that have already been cut, you have a better idea of what you are getting and how to proceed with future cuts. I must have 10 to 12 buckets of "cut" material. Been polishing cut Geodes and Brazilians for the last 6 months and still have some waiting in the queue.
Good luck
