No reports of Onyx being taken out of the mines.

It has what I can only describe as a "salty earthy" smell. If that makes sense

I'm most likely wrong I doubt I got it all figured out that stone has been through some gnarlyness Ryan

Reminds me of a morphed Baraboo Quartzite. The area in the Blue (Barron) Hills in NW WI is loaded with it. Will try to find a pic of one of my pieces for comparison. I have seen some there with bands of iron. Is yours magnetic?

This was from the Blue Hills. The area was once very volcanic and the remains of the ancient volcanos are still present. Some are more "Quartzy" than others. I do not have any with the layers of iron like yours.

Which mine? Could be banded iron, jaspelite, mix of shale,Jasper and hematite.

Yes the white lines could be quartz. Throw it in the tumbler. Run a knife alont it. See if it under cuts or some of the lines scratch.

Interesting. It appears to contain Iron, which would be magnetic.

Not familar with Sycamore. Where is it located? I have banded iron that is tan color and some that is red and black. Not all of it is magnetic. On the red banded iron the red is usually a jasper colored by iron and Hematite is actually an iron oxide which can be magnetic or not. Mary Ellen jaspers which some have a lot of hematite are variably magnetic. Some have crystal vugs in them and white quartz veins.
