OK, I managed to get this thing cut. It pushed the max of my 10" tile saw and I had to buy a new blade a quarter of the way into the cut. I'm sure you'll see some saw marks in that first section and then some yellow paint from the new blade in the other part, but it is what it is...the best I could manage with what I have. There isn't anyone around these parts with a big saw I can use. Let me know what you think after seeing the inside of this thing. I still lean towards tree fern, but I'm no expert.
The end I cut off broke along the fracture.
Some close-ups

Looks great. Not all slices are that distinct, but you can clearly see the rootlets and half-rolled frond stalks & petioles.

Just to bring this back full circle, I have finished tumbling the end cut and thought I'd show the results.
I like it, it makes an interesting looking tumble and it always leads into an explanation of it's origins.

Almost a year later but worth the wait. Awesome stone. Chuck Well, we know this is a delayed gratification game, right? Actually, I've had it done for a minute, but my computer died before I got the photo posted. New laptop, files retrieved from old hard drive and moving on now. I have the other half of the end cut to tumble still, so expect to see that one next summer.

Thanks for posting this. Great specimen and super job tumbling it. I will start looking closer at my river tumbled rocks from now on, especially looking for the little "C" shapes that Mel mentioned.

This is sweet, Randy. I love palm-like (plant-like) specimens.
