Take 7 match books remove staple and separate. Scissors heads off of matches. Cut head off of CO2 cartridge and drill hole just big enough for match heads to fit thru hole. Fill CO2 cartridge with match heads. Insert fuse. Lay on ground and point at some very distant safe target. cover ears and do not stand behind. seek cover Pretty much makes a 50 caliber look like a BB gun.

Does the CO2 can explode or fly like a rocket? I ask because it seems it could go either way and there isn't anything in between.
ETA
I love that you know precisely how many match books one needs for this toy.

Not a projectile so much as a b__b (fill in the blank, don't want to say it out loud). And one that is just as likely to go off while being assembled, not waiting for when you are ready for it to happen. And I always thought sutheners missing digits was caused by careless use of farm equipment. Boys............

Not the self light wood stick ones. Those would be dangerous and could go off during assembly.

In CA the legal term is "destructive device" with exposure to doing felony time.

Only the widdle bit about dangerous to assemble. I would be perfectly comfortable putting those match tips into that bottle. I do get the feeling as he describes it, that it doesn't explode, instead it flies off like an unguided missile. Hence my query.

I missed that the end was open. Under the destructive device definition, however, they'd get you either way here...as a bomb or projectile would qualify as such.

I went to high school with a guy that was stuffing match heads into an empty CO2 cylinder, don't know if he was using heads off of wooden matches, or paper matches. What I do know is the cylinder blew up while he was stuffing, he lost some body parts (fingers, fingertips, whatever), damaged tendons in his wrist, and also had shrapnel go into his abdomen. Trip to the ER for sure, also got to spend some time in the hospital for several surgeries.
Once you personally know someone that by their own stupidness got them in trouble like that, you tend to stay away from stuff like that. I don't even play with little blackcat firecrackers, or sparklers. Guess girls don't go in for that kind of thing much, certainly no attraction in it for me.
I can get into enough trouble with supposedly "safe" activities, lol.

Had a friend get arrested for destructive device with dry ice in a water bottle. He put the lid on, threw it into a vacant field and it exploded just as the cop came around the corner. Case got tossed by the DA but the defense attorney cost him $2500 to accomplish this.

Real hard to find strike anywhere matches.
"Hey ya'll, watch THIS!"
So many things wrong here.... (insert favorite social, economic, or ethnic class here) vasectomy? Above co2 assembly. Light it and count to 10...

There has been cases where these device explode instead of firing like a rocket. Use a fuse and seek cover. The metal casing is on the verge of rupturing due to the intense instantaneous pressure. As far as dropping book match heads in the bottle it is quite safe. Especially in Georgia humidity. Nothing like the danger of tightening threads on a pipe bomb and compressing powder. That is dangerous. This a much safer animal if BOOK matches are used. And a chain saw file is used to polish burrs just-in-case. DO NOT use strike anywhere matches.
At night the flame is 8 feet long and quite a blob of fire. The report is extremely load. This is one mean launch. The launch speed must be in the 3000 to 10,000 feet per second range(maybe faster) and direction control quite predictable. Oddly, there is often a 3 to 4 second delay after ignition flames are seen.
Fired into a clay bank it may travel 18 inches into the clay. That is a lot considering it's density and profile.
Law enforcement would be all over you if caught with such a device. Rightfully so.
Another one we did as 15 year old boys was unrolling fire crackers and simply filling an army surplus grenade and plugging it(plugging it = stupid). I suppose the firecracker powder had high powdered aluminum/magnesium content. Lots of patience getting the powder. One such bomb can powder a 4 inch steel reinforced park table. Our 25 year old scout master thought it was a joke till he saw it's power. He made us quit. Apologies to that park table.

Bundle of sparklers with handles cut off and a sparkler from the center sticking out for a fuse. Wrap and wrap and wrap with electrical tape as tight as possible.
Put your index finger and thumb tips together to form a circle. A bundle that size will break windows a block away.
Don't forget, you didn't hear it from me. Jim

Jim,
Might try taping a thin straight stick like a bottle rocket to the c CO2 bottle for better stability....
Light, drop in a pvc pipe facing straight up, and hide behind a sturdy tree.
Please report your results here.... Lol I ain't doing it!

It often doesn't go the way as planned. I have access to plenty of photos where things went sideways. Playing with that stuff is pretty dangerous. Gotta love the guys that say, "here, hold my beer."
