Superb. Absolutely superb once again James. I have NEVER had tiger eye come up like that, youve inspired me to go and get some and see if I can equal that.

James those are really gorgeous! I am so jealous of the shine you seem to achieve with all your tumbling projects. My recent rose quartz batch still didn't have the shine I was hoping for even after 2 weeks in cirium oxide. Your projects are an inspiration to us all James!!

That's agian for the kind words guy's! You're my inspiration to do better. I'm begining to think that the pre polish step is in fact the most critical step, rather then the polish itselfs. You just gotta keep trying new things. I hope that SISA for 1.99 for 5 lbs is the right stuff. I saw that too and I didn't believe it could be right. We'll see, I quess.

Hey Wiz, I know what you're talking about. When I first started I went for 3 or 4 months and I could hold all of my polished rocks in one hand and not worry about dropping any. Once I discovered a few hints, things really turned around. It took me a while to truly get the hang of sorting out by hardness. I sort after they have been roughed, and I pay very close attention to what scratches what. Learning how to sort correctly was the first big step, buying dedicated barrels to polish in was the other. Now I have boxes of rocks all over. Oh, I almost forgot, the other thing is borax! I'm a true believer on borax. I add some to each phase, as well as use it during the cleaning cycles. (Gotta keep those U. S. Borax stock prices up).

I only used Borax for the clean-up. 1/2 a hour did the trick.

Hey Kim, I add 1 tbs to each load for two reasons, 1) it helps control any gas that might develop along with the odors that go with it, 2) it increases the wetting action of the water. How much benefit you might get would depend on your individual water. The "harder" the water, the more surface tension it has, and hench the less prone it is to "wet" a hard surface. If you take a glass of water and add a spot of borax, and then put your fingers in it, you can feel the wetting. Your fingers will almost feel like they have a film of water on them. That is the characteristic that I feel is beneficial in the slurry. To make the slurry form a tighter film on the rocks.

i copied the following from this link www.gemcutters.org/LDA/Archive/html%20files/LD132.htmSubject: RE: Red Tigereye? In regards to Red Tigereye, you can turn the brown to red with heat in your ordinary oven. The temperature required is about 400-500 degrees. Bring temperature up slowly and reduce it slowly as well. Unless it remains at the higher temperature for some considerable length of time, you will only get a surface change of color...Consequently, finish your cab or whatever before heat treating the piece.... have you tried this? kim

I've never tried it. For some reason I just don't like red tigers eye. I don't know why. It's just never appealed to me. In fact, I really only like the gold tuff. But that's just me.
I do however, find it interesting that the color changes with heat. It must be the iron content that makes the color change.
