...and got laid off Yesterday I took a spill w/my cart. Little background. I was doing seasonal employment w/ Amazon. Hired as a picker. Run around the warehouse pulling customer orders. Physically demanding job. Industrial athlete conditioning. Especially at peak hiring. 60 hour work weeks. I did 4 of those pup in a row. This Amazon warehouse is like 4 football fields long. I was down in enemy territory at the –10 yard line. Scanner said go to the other end of the field for a hail mary pick. Maybe it was kindle, a funk pop, battery charger, quart of oil, a baby arm holding an apple, a pair shoes, a vibrator, or a rock book? Nonetheless, 'the mohs' is determined to get the pick in less than 1.5 millisecond. So off I go doing my low roll shuffle w/ my cart. (There is no running policy. What I do is not actually running-- but I am moving ) So I’m down to 35 yard line. Time too cool the jets and BOOOM!
I hit a pillar with my cart! Cart went flying. The totes on the cart went flying. I was still standing. Luckily no one got hurt.!! But I got laid off. O well... the temporary gig Lasted LONGER THAN I EXPECTED. I think I’m officially retired. After 43.5 odd years of work I ended up right where I started from. rockbottom...mostly

I'm so sorry Ed! I'm glad you weren't hurt, though. I heard those Amazon jobs can be brutal. Maybe it's for the best.

I'm so sorry you got laid off. And your story is so entertaining...I'm very torn. Just like your avatar.
Glad you weren't hurt! We have an Amazon warehouse here as well. I've been amazed at all the young kids who left the hospital to make more money at Amazon, only to come back about 6 months later saying it wasn't worth the money.

That an interesting question about Amazon Who needs them?
I wonder how important Amazon really is? Obviously they are huge.
But are they important like other corporation such as: IBM, AT&T, Standard Oil? Obviously those corp are fundamental to modern society
Is Amazon in the same league?
I’m of two minds on it. If they disappeared tomorrow most modern life would still go on. Yet they are truly mover and shakers. Remaking society. For good or ill? What will come of it?
Many times at Amazon I’d shake my head at all the crap people have manufactured & want. Geez! it was never ending.
Socrates advice: Goes to the market--- not to buy— but look at all the things one could live without.
Obviously were living in highly mechanized society. It could crash. As I understand it-- hominids have inhabit the earth for eons --but homo sapiens have only existed for a short period of that time. We may to be too successful…
anyway let the good time roll… mohs

Do we have too many choices? Is this why people have a hard time committing to something or to someone? What if there is something better? Is anyone truly happy with what they have?

Those are obviously good Socratic eternal questions, Ali!
What satisfies me the most is non material When I can be helpful to another person or another person show me a random act of kindness. Not in any big way. Perhaps it just some some set of skills one possesses at the moment to help, or maybe, just handing out gum to co-worker.
I don’t know It just those small things that bring me the most pleasure… mostly

I don’t know It just those small things that bring me the most pleasure… mostly I was talking to my daughter about who we would want to sit down and have a conversation with when we die and mine are Socrates, Aristotle and of course Elvis....she said the 1st 2 would never sit down with me but that's another topic on things that make me go hhhmmmmm.....
They were fascinating men
Anyways.....
You and I are very similar in the non material
I couldn't care less what you have its who you are
Kindness is free and it should be sprinkled everywhere-people often think it has to be some grand thing, when you never know what a smile can do or a have great day, or just a compliment or a quick email to check in and say Hi
Its the little things in life that mean the mohst always........
Grateful, thankful and BLESSED

Here’s one of the ironies of my spill
Earlier in the lunch room a co-worker I never had any contact with was using the microwave next to me. She spilled the broccoli from her container in what look like contained beef. grumbled as she cleaned it up, throwing the broccoli away, and continued to heat the rest of the dish.
I told her she was lucky. It was just broccoli. If it had been me-- it would have been my potatoes & carrots. (Which I probably picked up off the counter & continued heating ) She didn’t see much humor in that. Told me broccoli was good. made some other non sensible small talk and went out to have smoke and eat.
Gotta move & eat quick Its only a 1/2 lunch break. It takes 5 minutes to walk to the lunch room and 5 minutes to walk back to the work station
So when I had my spill she was the one who witnessed it. She was kind enough-- picked up my Gatorade bottle -- asked if I was hurt-- then went about her merry way.
I saw her later walking back from break I told her we both had a spill that day. She looked at me she never saw me before.
Asked: ‘weren’t you the one that spilled the broccoli?’ Yes. Said--- I was the one who spilled my cart! Reply---Oh! I’m sorry--- I’m so tired
Yep ---I know what you mean Next time we better eat our spinach Harder to clean that up off counter though
Mosalty
Anyway she & lots of others will wonder what happened to me... mostly I vanished. That part -- really hard. You make a lot of acquaintances in a place like that. Hundreds of people you pass daily. How you doing? My line ---roll’n & scroll’n
Then you just disappear ….
