It's been a crazy couple of years. I moved from Washington to California and started law school last year. However, I finally got the tumblers going just before Christmas, and came across an old batch of basalt that I wanted to polish. It's not as shiny and pretty as the obsidian, but it came out OK for basically black river rock. I'll see if I can get a better photo. Looks like my depth of field was too narrow. (The green/brown color on them is the redwood tree above them, getting reflected.) So here's the basalt that popped out of the Lot-o this afternoon: Basalt by Inga Holmquist, on Flickr

Great looking stuff. What is the hardness for that?

Great looking stuff. What is the hardness for that? Thanks, Dave. :-) Seems to vary a lot - I guess by what impurities may be in it? Also the crystalline structure can vary, I think, and probably affects how well it does without chipping. I'm seeing ranges, when I google it, but coming in between 5-6. I'd be curious what others find. The last threads on basalt that I was able to discovered on the boards were at least 10 years old. Curious if any one else has played with it more recently...?

Ahh, I just reread your post and saw you finished in a Loto. Nice going. Might be soft as you said, but nice going nonetheless. I'm still rolling rotary, so I know I won't see results like yours. For now, I'm just sticking with hard stuff. Nice batch. Dave

I didn’t know basalt would shine up that well. Where is the basalt from?

I didn’t know basalt would shine up that well. Where is the basalt from? Probably most came from the area around the little creek that used to run the forest where I lived for a while up in Washington State, but honestly, it could have gotten all mixed in with other stuff I've picked up from random places. I just like black river rocks and will tend to pop one in my pocket if it catches my eye. Same with different colored granite - I recently did a bunch of little granite "eggs."

The basalt came out really nice. Thanks! Love my Loto for being able to polish such different stuff to easily. Finally got a new motor for it. Don't know how many pounds of rock that thing has churned out, and finally the little motor gave up. The new one shipped really fast and swapped in quite easily, so that was a relief.

Our basalt in N. MN doesn't shine like that. It will depend on the basalt. Here in the NW, our basalt (as well as the dacite and basanite) can vary from aphanitic (super-fine crystals) to very grainy. Generally, the grainier rocks tend not to take a good polish due to mixed hardness.

Welcome back ingawh. Your tumbles always stood above. I learned a great amount from your tumbling methods. Thanks for introducing us to your technology.
