Hi, I was going to say a personal hello but there's too many -- looks like the gang's all here.
Chert: yes, I've thought of that. Some resembles agate. It was the obvious banding in its raw state that looked like agate that led me to pick it up to start with, but it doesn't have the same feel to it when you pick it up, seems softer/more porous -- but not all of it. I wondered whether it might form along with limestone.
Actually, since I posted I've done more reading and yes, it's not unusual for layers of quartz-type rocks (silicates?) to form in the sedimentary limestones.
I also thought of dolomite. I don't trust my hardness testing since I don't know what I'm doing. I should note, despite the sense that some or most of it was soft, it didn't want to break down -- wouldn't make slurry -- several times through 60/90. That didn't make sense.
Some of the gray banded stuff is the part that looks most like agate. The pink looks like cotton candy or pepto bismol (double yuck!) I wouldn't know a cab shaper if it jumped up and bit me. I noticed later that I'd left some odd things in one of the photos -- those were the pieces that I was using to work on my solar "water feature." I took photos of it, too.
I definitely thought of using a strong flashlight to backlight the ruby, but haven't had time to mess with it. I'm new with the digital camera.
I just blew away a lot of time doing a super-sort of all of my emerald, which is a lot. I've run a lot of it over and over. It has always polished and just glitters, but it retains a lot of matrix. I've been working at it, trying to hit the balance of getting the matrix off without chewing up the stone. One of these days I've got to get them up here too.
This is great commentary. For the first time I was reading and retaining the rock development stuff because I was interested in this stuff I picked up and in everybody's comments about it. Thanks!
