You never fail to impress me. Give me a holler when you think this thread has run it's course and I will enshrine it for you. Lots of great info. Thanks Tela - This thread has wandered back and forth a bit during the weeks it took to build the tumbler. Would a clean new thread with all of my pictures from start to finish in one original post make more sense for the archive? I am not ready yet just asking. Chuck

FWIW, I'm pretty sure that skateboard wheels are available in much smaller sizes than what we probably saw with our kids growing up, so there may be something close in size to the garage door rollers, NRG . They are definitely harder and smaller than when i skated pools in the 70's and early 80's. Heck, I remember when skateboard wheels were steel. I'll skip the ceramic stage which was next. Poly wheels have changed everything. Could be a good alternative to what you're looking to do.

I think that is the best looking tumbler I’ve ever seen. I watched the video twice. Is there a close second? Do I need to step up my game? Maybe some LED lighting or gold leafed pinstripes. I ended up going with the Lortone barrel guides and it has been up and running in the garage for a couple days. I need to make a trip to the hardware store for the material to complete the back and doors. I REALLY like being able to pull out the tumbler portion and have taken it in and out of the main frame several times. The tumbler portion is much heavier then I expected but still way lighter then the complete tumbler. Chuck

Yours is well designed for functionality and also looks great. LED lighting might actually decrease its aesthetic appeal for me.

very nice... (skate board wheels work great as guides, no problems with mine, lots of abandoned boards around for scavenging parts So what's your take on the motor up top? Think early on you were wondering about it? My benchtop's too cluttered so I'd be worried about always shoving something into the belt. Suppose there wasn't room under, or above on the cartridge?

Think early on you were wondering about it? My benchtop's too cluttered so I'd be worried about always shoving something into the belt. Suppose there wasn't room under, or above on the cartridge? The motor on top idea came from having the motor underneath for the last 6 or 7 years. When it was mounted on the bottom it was out of site and out of mind so it was never really cleaned and maintained. I do not like the look of it up top but now it will be much easier to keep it clean. Their will be a belt guard added either sheet metal or wood. The other main feature of this tumbler was to be able to pull out the mechanical section and the motor on top makes that really easy. Searching for a newer 1/3 Hp with capacitor start now. Chuck

Well here it is in the workshop. This week I added a brand new 1/3 HP motor, back panel and shaker style doors. The only things remaining are the belt guard and some door hardware like magnetic stops and knobs. I still want a capacitor start motor but the prices I was seeing were just too high. I'll keep watching EBAY. Thanks for looking Chuck

Well that sure turned out nice. The doors look great. I know you didn’t insulate for sound, but do you notice much difference with the doors open or closed?

The motor up top is just enough to make someone wonder what the heck is in that cabinet. The design could certainly be modified to leave room for insulation. I think you would really be surprised by how much it limits the sound alrady. That was not my main objective but still a nice feature. I took a video with my phone with the doors open and shut but the dang phone microphone really amplifies sound so it is not very accurate to tell how quiet it really is. Chuck

That makes a huge difference. Hmmmm... In person it is even better. That was without trying too. The back and centers of the doors are only 1/4" plywood. The back could have been a solid 3/4" sheet and the doors could also have been made from full 3/4" plywood had I not wanted shaker style. Only a couple of the barrels in that video had rocks in them so the next test will be running it under full load. I have run this quantity of rock several times in the past using my old home built and stock lortones so I know what 80 pounds of rock not enclosed sounds like. I expect this to be better now. Chuck

Tried to fix a bunch of the broken picture links today. Had to try to remember what pictures and then place them all in cloudinary and redo all the links.

I've had good luck finding new-old-stock motors at a couple repair/rewinding shops in the general area. If you have any around you might be able to make a deal on a cap. start motor you want.

Thanks for the heads up. I was originally a little worried about torque at start up but this has been in use for about 5 months now with no issues. I turn it off every week at clean out and when I reload it to the max with full barrels it does not hesitate at all just starts rolling. I still would have preferred the capacitor start but won't make a change till something breaks. Chuck
