My buddy raised shiitake for years by plugging oak logs. Yum yum yum He wanted me to cover this concrete system with a shade house for mushroom production. Because this concrete system can be filled and drained quickly with free creek water he wanted to put the logs in these pans to soak them as needed. And grow with the logs in place in the pans. Apparently a deep soak is part of the process. I have 2 of these systems I used for 25 years to grow aquatic plants in. They gravity drain in 5 minutes and gravity fill in 3 hours. 8 inch drain at upper right. The aisles are tractor friendly. Crop of water lilies

Yes, a soak is needed. After 12 months or so, the logs are to be "shocked" into producing. A 24 ice water soak is needed.
I like that set up, for both shocking logs and growing aquatic plants.

Another scrap deal Beth. They were removing 22' x 4' x 8" deep concrete roofing panels from the farmer's market. The cost to grind them well exceeded the cost to deliver them to my farm. I had 4 dump truck loads of gravel dumps in the pond and spread it with a tractor. Raised the water to gravel level and hand raked the gravel to exact water level. Hired a monster crane an me and him set the 22 panels including 2 deep gutter panels in 3 hours.(beat the 4 hour min.) 60' x 60' and level within 1/8 inch. Allows accurate water level for ebb and flow using low 2 inch seedling pots or immersing 8 inch water lily pots. The aisles were darkened by sprinkling with powdered rust for solar absorption when pouring concrete between the panels. The stored heat from the aisles overnight yielded growth well exceeding the greenhouses. If they ever legalize growing marijuana in Georgia....actually that would attract the worst of the worst.
