Genealogy is something that I've been doing for years, I enjoy it. I have traced my lineage back to the 1500's in England, mostly from Quaker records. I found out that one of my ancestors' (a cousin, actually) names was on a church plaque from way back when there so I contacted the church and they sent me a picture of the plaque plus pictures of the church inside and out from before there was electricity.

No, it won't change my life- but I do it for fun and because it's interesting.

Me, too. The DNA part helped show some of the old family stories were just old wives' tales, and I'm not concerned about the police getting hold of it to solve crimes - even if it turns out to be a relative who committed them - any more than I am about leaving fingerprints on the cart at the supermarket, having search engines tracking my browsing to sell me stuff, having most everything I buy end up in my credit history, or throwing away non-financial documents into the trash. Some might wonder about hereditary disease, lost relatives or other reasons, but for me it was just for enjoyment - sort of like a puzzle or mystery novel that's about my own family - and no other reason for me to do it.

I agree about the accuracy thing. They claimed PCR was 99.9% accurate then came out with new technology that they claimed was significantly more accurate. How do you get significantly more accurate than 99.9% accurate? The fact is that this test has never been close to 99.9% accurate for several reasons that can make it highly faulty.

And what role do viruses inserting themselves in to our genes play a role in accuracy? Some viruses have actually become a normal part of the human genome.

I agree with you. I was very hesitant to do the test.

I belong to a board for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. There was a huge debate about dna testing there. A vast majority of the people were perfectly fine with willy nilly sharing their dna for the "good of science". I was thoroughly flamed for disagreeing. People by and large trust that their information will never be used for some nefarious reason. I don't.

I didn't use my name on the envelope.

DH and I take every opportunity to educate the grandkids about their rights to privacy and the prudence of taking precautions. It's surprising just how easily people will willingly give away their information. The younger generations are going to regret an awful lot.

Thing is that we really do not know what they are going to use it for. Look at the story behind the HELA cell line. OK it did a lot of good but it was also developed off her cells without consent or compensation. That is kid of like someone taking your artwork without permission and making a lot of money off it without giving you any compensation.

I'm reading this book right now -- fascinating! Research in this field is moving so rapidly the author says the book will be obsolete before one finishes reading it. There is a vast amount of research to be conpleted before firm conclusions about human origins can be validated.

Though each living person's life evidences the reality of 'connecting' back to Adam, as canonized in the Bible, there is no proven pedigree documenting lineage back to Adam and Eve. So true Dave........even migration to other countries has been a cause for "names" to change dramatically due to language barriers and translations.......Even in modern history related to our country and others. If the magistrates of various border ports of entry could not spell, pronounce, translate or understand the "name" they changed it...!

It's a wonder how the Catholic church "Pope's" names (linage) have (for the most part) continued for so long......?..........Even Coptic, Palmarian and Legio "names" lingered for centuries from year 1 AD.

Not so sure the "the Rose would smell the same" even if the "name" were to change...........!

Reminds me of police reliance on latent and partial fingerprints, where the database software zeroes in on only a few markers leading to frequent false positives.

If someone is accused of a serious crime and a serious sentence is involved, I would rather there be strong DNA evidence to convict than a fingerprint. Yes, it is an imperfect science, but it's better than fingerprints when someone's life is in the balance.

On the science side, there are more confirmable, or refutable, markers. On the other hand, it is also possible (and easy enough) to frame someone with both fingerprints or DNA, so a serious-minded jury's job is still going to be a difficult one to determine how plausible is such evidence. Nothing in life is 100% certain - unfortunately, not even rocks.
