My daughter shipped me something across the state in 2013 in the larger SFRB. Again in 2016 from 25 miles away. I used both in 2017 to ship things across the country. No problem with them being received. My PO said they were previous versions of Domestic SFRB before being resized and they they were still usable.

Prior to the Small Flat Rater, there were only Regular Flat Rate (now the Medium Flat Rate shirt box) and Large Flat Rate boxes. I can imagine someone at the counter seeing " Regular Flat Rate box" printed on the outside and assuming that it meant " Small Flat Rate" because it was the closest thing they could think that resembled a SFR box. You got a bargain shipping an old Regular Flat Rate at Small Flat Rate price - the counterperson obviously had no idea that the old Regular = the new Medium shirt box. Some folks get all the breaks

Half the planet thinks a medium is a large.

If I'm doing small shipments, I exclusively use padded flat rate envelopes. I can fit vastly more in there than I can in a SFRB (5-7 pounds of rough, or half a dozen slabs), for essentially the same price. Requires careful wrapping if I'm sending slabs, but I have less than 1% breakage using them. If I'm just doing 1-3 slabs, I'll put cardboard on each side of each slab, then wrap those in 2 layers of self-sealing large bubble envelopes. If I'm doing more expensive slabs, or more than just a few, I'll use the eBay branded box (along with wrapping like described above) contained in the padded flat rate envelope. I've also fallen in love with eBay branded padded envelopes and boxes... very affordable (especially if you have an eBay store subscription... you get a decent credit every quarter which will pay for a LOT of envelopes and boxes), and lets you ship up to a pound domestically via USPS first class package rates... between ~$2.50- ~$5.00, depending on weight.
