somehow i got all out of sync and ended up with two batches out of polish today! one was a mix of stuff, some very nice green quartz that banjo sent me that i cut up on the saw, some very cool "orbicular" (?) stuff i got from shorty, some yummy pieces of botswana agate from Redwoodrocks and some bits and pieces, odds and ends. this batch went 3 weeks in 60/90, one week in 220, one week in prepolish and one week in Aluminum oxide. and here is a batch of obsidian i got from Shorty. i have never done obsidian before and i started it in 60/90...and almost didn't have anything left , so i cut up another batch and did that to get enough to continue on in 220. i did a borax rinse between every step to get these real clean, i did an extra 4 days in SISA and then a week in Tin Oxide polish, the two in the middle are my favorites: close up: ok, and here are my first attempts at grinding!! i got a grinder on sunday as a birthday present from my parents!!! thanks for looking! not bad for an old broad, eh? helluva way to get a manicure tho.... hahaha, KD

WOW impressive the lot of it. But special kudos on the two little pieces of obsidian, just like the piece I found when I was a kid that got me into rocks in the first place. The grinding is great too...so...truthfully...is it hard to do?

i love all of them kd!!, i am doing some obsidian right now too, and yeah, after the 60/90 they do greatly reduce in volume. i like the tiger eye, and what i think are the botswana agates.

KD, those are fabulous! I love the obsidian and can't wait to get mine (from Shorty too) out - but they have a way to go. Still in the 60/90 stage. A grinder for your birthday! COOL! Were you completely surprised or did you know you were getting it? What kind is it? Come on now and fill us in on all the details! Happy birthday! Your first grinding attempts are great! And,yeah, it is a hell of a way to get a manicure! But more fun than just sitting and filing your nails! ;D I have a whole tub of things to grind as soon as my hand can do it - tried the other day, but had a hard time holding on to the rock. It's getting better though and shouldn't be long before I am back at it. I ordered a nylon apron and got it today, so now I don't have to wear my garbage bag outfit when grinding! And it was SOOOO cute! llana

whoop here it is... my parents love me VERY much! and it's all my dad's fault cuz he bought me the first CE 3 pounder for Xmas last year....and i kinda HINTED, like brought the catalog up and, um...marked the page..... tomorrow is my official birthday and hubby bought me a 10" tile saw, couldn't exactly sneak it in under cover of darkness, so.........i got lots of questions on the tile saw, like...how do you hold the rock in place? the little gizmo chuck that comes with it (for tile) ain't gonna hold no boulder......help! by the way, did i mention i got a whopping big piece of ocean jasper too? i'm old but i'm happy! oh my gosh it's the genie i've been lusting over for almost a yr now! oh you've been a very good daughter to get that ;D. i must go find a towel and something to poke my eyeballs back in. now i have lots of questions. how big of a mess does it make? did you have to get any other supplies with it or just crank it up?

i prefer pregnant lucky dog, sands...........and yes, i'm an only child!
Rocky, it makes a wee bit of splash, but not too bad...i have it downstairs and it's just concrete floor, i went through a lot of paper towels! learning curve here, just like the saw, i think. i now know the need for dop sticks....but i don't want to do the whole ball of wax technology...anybody out there using dop sticks with epoxy?

Wow! KD, you must have been a very, very good girl to rate a birthday present like that! Can't wait to see what you get when Santa comes visiting!
I don't use a dop - just hold the rock with both hands. I am going to try to make my own homemade dop out of a stick and florist clay. Don't know if it will work, but am going to try it just out of curosity.

i am not 100% sure where they got it, but i think Kingsley North, because that is the catalog i brought up to show them....the true bummer was when we got it out of the box, the fiberboard piece was cracked at the bottom so it wouldn't sit level, so my husband added that box channel on the bottom to straighten it and redid the rubber feet (did i tell you i love him VERY much?)...he said from the looks of it, it may have been refurbished...so who knows where they got it, it works, i don't care!
i'm rocking and a rolling and a grinding and a sawing, yes, i'm too bad.....
