What a beautiful setting. We shopped over 100 properties Beth. Took our time. This natural setting was the target and we are happy growing old here. |

Debris about burned from 1st four large trees. Got 4 more large trees to drop and should be finished. Clean up required on only 2 of them thankfully.

jamespContinuing bonfire for 2 weeks so far? Able to use heavy equipment to store the inferno? Or manual labor Loggers cut big trees Nov. 21, fire terminated Nov. 29. Ahead of 2 week estimate. Stacked and burned 70 feet down the hill. Used up a 5 gallon can of chain saw gas reducing trunks and limbs to burn size. Lots of nasty limb bows and snags(widow makers) when trees lay atop each other. Especially oaks. Stage 1 accomplished, hillside cleaned ahead of schedule. Got to leave wood fuel at bottom of hill to burn stumps and 2 more large trees to fall. Will bring in large track hoe to dig, shake out soil in stumps, and pile stumps to remaining fuel at bottom of hill. James still in tact lol, figured I would break down. Too much repetitive lifting. Back needs to recuperate. Fuel wood to burn stumps still remains at bottom of hill to left Nov. 30   Trees as of Nov. 6 before leaf fall, cold/wet/windy weather moved in, nice working temps. Laying trees down systematically on a hill allowed some stacking to fire w/small tractor making job faster.   |

Hope to get a 100' X 80' flat graded spot on this ridge for a 70' X 35' ARCO steel building. Should have excellent drainage since it slopes in 3 directions. Looks like a 70' x 35' building will cost about 24K. ARCO is competitive. Add concrete, erection, wiring, insulation and budget should stretch to 80K. Will be attached to our small cabin sitting to right out of photo. One level climate controlled retirement home/shop. This time I will sit down and watch as general contractor and am looking forward to the experience. ARCO will supply most of the contractors for the concrete, erection, wiring and insulation for about $28 to $30/sq ft. Then add internal house and shop framing/climate control/windows/etc. Hopefully fire pit income will pay this thing off in 4-5 years in time for medicare/retirement age.  |

For some reason this skit from Monty Python pops into my head; The fellow has quite a fine lady on his arm. Lumberjacking never paid such dividends down this way unfortunately. They sent me to Ottawa for 6 months out of school and got to witness the last of the log rolling lumberjacks on the Gatineau River. Snow day one year ago from today. Big tree in center photo was another one that the professionals dropped. Hate to say but the roots were feeding off the septic field and growing an inch in diameter each year. It had to go. It was only 6 inches in diameter in 1984. Another tricky one scheduled just behind it on other side of house. And the big Poplar to left closest by. This was a Scarlet (red) Oak that was split to firewood being so close to house and stove. It burns well even being 100% green and fills the house with a delightful aroma. Woodstove pipe located at left corner of cabin and stove is located in unfinished basement.   |
