Stewart! Merry Christmas and Happy New year!! Thanks for the pics. Amazing to hear about such a different life than my own. What would it cost to buy land there and put a home on it? And What put you there for the holidays? bcrockhound Thank you and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too! I talked to some people about real estate and it wasn't very clear to me. The area is owned generally by the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, as the Inuvialuit people have a land claim on it. I think you have to work it out with the Inuvialuit if you want to buy/lease land. A lot of the housing is public housing, run and discounted by the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation. Construction is probably very expensive, as the only way they get supplies is once or twice per year in the summer when the barge comes. The houses aren't very fancy, but functional. I visited one house that was almost like a renovated storage container. It was quite nice but basically one rectangular hall. There was no house I visited with more than one bathroom. Water and sewage are delivered/pumped out. The culture of visiting is definitely interesting up there. You don't give people warning or schedule a time. You just go around and come in and sit down. My girlfriend, pictured above, is from there, so I visited her for the holidays. I write a magazine covering the Inuvialuit, so I was able to combine the trip with some work for discounted airfare. As for the heater in the school gym, I believe the community is mainly powered by diesel. Most people drive skidoos instead of cars. Gas is a valuable commodity. A great birthday gift is a tank of gas so someone can go for a long skidoo ride.

Very cool thread, thanks for posting this. I've dealt with cold, and small communities, but the extended period of dark would probably put me over the edge. Certainly a different lifstyle. Thanks for posting.
