Broomstick handle. Must have broken off in the crash.

My initial thought was fossil walrus tooth (or some other kind of tooth). Say that because of the longitudinal crazing + the black speckled interior that would be osteo-dentine.

Not sure what it is, but it's a pretty cool find.

Looks toothy to me too. Is that some blue flash in there?

The inside texture does not look like bone there is no marrow in the center. That makes me think wood. the exterior looks like wood but I can't really tell if there are wood cells from the photo.

I think bone but I'm not sure I would cut the broken end off and polish it, then you might be able to see what it is. looks woody to me!!

Thanks, all- I'll try to slice off the end when I can and get some more pictures I wish I could describe the texture, it's not like the wood I've found Oh, and the broomstick crack made me chuckle

Thanks I'm still leaning towards bone (but now considering the tooth theory) I don't know enough to place any money on it however

I think the suggestion above from woodman is going to be what you will need to do to identify. Maybe some more pictures for us ?

Maybe some more pictures for us ? Agree, at least a straight-on shot of the broken end. If there is an outer rind, which I think I'm seeing, then it is fossil tooth/ivory, so a photo showing the end would be useful. Bones don't generally end in rounded points like that (even if worn down, the interior structure would still show through at the tip).

Haven't had much time, I think I am going to take woodman's suggestion and cut the end. Don't have anything to polish the end, but I'll definitely get some more (and better) pictures.

After you cut , sand it with 600 paper, get it as smooth as you can. Did you get your macro filters? I got some coming for my T1, tried some on my sx60 HS and not sure there are much better than just using the macro mode, but still leaning on them. One thing I have found that you need lots of light when using them, outside in the sun probably the best. Good Luck

A lot of delays from the weather we've been having. Today it's going to be sunny but 17 degrees right now... Finally finished my second batch of tumbles and pulled them out yesterday so I'm itching to get some pictures!

Maybe... But, boy, would that be a little disappointing. 'Course, I'd still have a nice piece of wood I suppose
