How awesome! You will love it. The first machine I ever bought was the Hi-Tech All-U-Need so I could cut opal. They didn't make the slant cabbers back then, but I still love it and use it. It's really nice for doing backs of cabs, too.
You will definitely enjoy it and it is quiet to boot. There will be a little adjustment period to get used to doming on a flat lap, but once you get it down, you'll be golden. The hardest part will be getting the flat spots off the dome. Best tip I can give you on that is to make sure you put rubber backers on the laps before you put the sanding discs on. It helps immensely with that issue. hitechdiamond.com/shop/sponge-pads/
Did you get the 6" or 8"? I'm so excited for you!

When Vince got an 8" one from a friend, we discovered that the only difference was the hole size to fit the disc. So, I got a replacement plastic cover for the top in the 8" model. Fits perfectly and I can still use my 6" laps, or swipe one of Vince's 8" ones if I want to. I'm betting it's the same with the slant cabber. If you ever want to switch, call them and ask if the 8" top will fit.

Oh yeah, you got something you'll love using there. My first machine was an Inland, and it worked okay after I found out about foam backers for the flexible sanding and polishing discs. Your unit will be much better than the Inland.

I've been thinking of getting a cab machine and this might be a better alternative to the ones I've been looking at, like the Pixie. A question for you experienced folks... I have a Graves faceter with a number of 8" laps. Could I also use those on this type of cabbing machine?

I would think you could, but cabbing is a lot harder on laps than faceting. If you are using those laps for faceting, I wouldn't chance it. Also, if you have solid steel faceting laps, they may be too heavy for the flat lap. I've never put one of my solid steel faceting laps on mine. If you buy a flat lap it will come with plastic backer plates and the diamond resin sanding discs. We make our own polishing discs with extra backer plates and leather discs.

Congrats in your purchase, Ali. I'll 2nd the need for the soft backers on your disks. Works like a soft wheel and smooths out all the flat spots. I made my own with craft foam. Cheap & easy 👍
Can't wait to see your first cabs!

Yeah, I'm in the same boat - the Pixie is pretty pricey for me. Also, my local gem club has an awesome workshop that costs $6 for 4 hours. I can use those cabbers for a lot of Saturday mornings for the price and hassle of my own cabbing machine. That said, it's always nice to have your own equipment so you can work at your own schedule and pace.

MsAli: Alison, as I understand the process the machines grind away and eventually polish the surface of the stone, no matter the brand, it's the manipulative skill in how the stone is positioned and the pressure that gets applied when such action takes place that creates the overall shape. It's knowing just how much to apply that brings forth the final masterpiece. Go girl, show what you've got. Urahhh Cheers, johnw
