Not a whole lot of finished tumbles this week but a few good ones emerged. Probably only about a pound of rocks in total. Just for fun I shot these photos using a brand new Iphone XS max instead of my normal camera ( jamesp). No changes to lighting or backdrop just swapped the camera. I did do post edits for exposure to get the white background correct but on the single agate slice making the background white threw off the color of the rock. This one should look familiar to a few of you Thanks for looking Chuck

Wow, they're so beautiful! I'd have a really hard time deciding which one I like best. when I looked at the third image I saw a whitish ghost floating through stone.

Great images with that phone - I'm not sure you lost anything compared to your camera. Another batch with no real favorites, but that banded rock below the pink rock (rhodonite?) in the group photo looks interesting. Is that a Bot?

That stripped one is a nice Botswana agate with a quartz cap. Chuck

Is that one of the contest Rhondonite? 😍 Bingo. Just a quick test rock that was run in this mixed batch but it shows promise. Still have a few months to dial it in. Chuck

Great camera work with a cell phone. I like the pink, contest rock? Yep that's a really quick sample of the contest rocks. I hand ground that one quite a bit and then only had it in stage one for one week. Chuck

The iPhone worked darn nice for you Chuck. iPhone works real nice with general purpose fluorescent bulb in photo below. The rhodonite is fine, Montana in the 5th a wow. My lighting has been working pretty good for tumbles but was not intended for it. I have two goose neck lamps that I use for wire wrapping and silversmithing. A while back I started shooting some tumbles in that spot and it has worked out well. I have tried the DSLR and light tent route but soon realized photography can be more complicated and more expensive then tumbling the rocks. The Iphone XS max is the latest and greatest and I really like the group shot of the rocks shown above. I still prefer my point and shoot sony with a carl zeiss lens for the individual shots. I just feel I have more control of the shot by being able to back away and zoom in without losing and quality when needed. If I have the phone too close to the rock I get some unwanted shadows. Here are some bulb specs. I know the Natural Spectrum bulbs are supposed to be great for the eyes but I have no idea how that translates to photos. Lumens: 1800 Natural Spectrum Voltage: 120V Energy Used: 27 Watt Why Natural Spectrum? Not all light is created equal! The eye evolved to work efficiently in natural light. Conventional artificial light light stimulates only some of the eye’s photoreceptors, so the eye works harder to see and focus. This results in glare, eyestrain and fatigue. Verilux Natural Spectrum light properly stimulates all of the photoreceptors in the eye, so they work more efficiently. A better functioning eye is more relaxed, resulting in a smaller pupil that can better focus light. The results are increased visual acuity and better processing for longer periods. Chuck

That rhodonite is a stand out, Chuck. I can see you won't have much trouble with the contest.

An older D90 Nikon and the wife's newer Nikon DSLR has these selections unchanged in the menu for fluorescent white balance. I was actually looking at the menu in my wife's newer Nikon to see if it had white balance selections for LED lighting - it did not. The iPad/iPhone seems to process LED lighting as it does fluorescent for what it is worth. No idea which one of these fluorescent WB settings relates best to Natural Spectrum. Other than the orange-er bulbs there is little difference between these fluorescent settings. The 2 goosenecks ain't a bad way to go. Manage the shadows as best as you can and presto. All digital cameras are only as good as their processing capability. Unlike film there is that digital processor programmed by us humans to replicate what the camera can replicate. Or artificially accentuate what we would prefer to see. The outcome is totally dependent on the camera's processor in auto mode for instance. Looks like the Apple bunch has a mastered a really user friendly camera to replicate the actual subject with hand holdable macros using very low wattage florescent bulbs. Looks like LED bulbs are going to be the new photo standard(2014 article) photography.tutsplus.com/articles/a-guide-to-using-consumer-led-bulbs-for-photography-and-video--cms-22708I use Husky brand LED work lights for work and successful photos but do not know the temp. This is a comparable with specs...temp is 5000K. www.amazon.com/dp/B01N2VVV5Q/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1
