Is the Hollywood ranch still open? I thought I saw something online about them having an auction or sale because the property was being sold. ??

From the website, looks like they are still open: www.holleywoodranch.com/They do run sales from time to time (big $1 per pound sale through this weekend).

Check web site to se if Richardson's diggings will be open, first of april may not be, especially this year. They always have tons of rocks at the shop which is always open.

If you're in the Portland area drop me a line, we're almost always near home and ready to rock...

As you mentioned a couple of times rockhounding was not a priority my vote would be to visit some National Parks. Some might be a bit weather dependent but in your last post you were delaying departure a bit. There are so many in California I won't even mention them as it sounds like you wanted to get into Oregon and perhaps Washington. Some highlights from our travels:
OREGON:
Crater Lake National Park- Some roads are probably closed now, but if they open up by the time you would get there it is well worth your time. If it is at all possible, the boat ride inside of the volcano to Wizard Island is amazing.
Mount St. Helens- take a tour of Ape Cave (in a National Forest just to the south).
Sea Lion Caves in Florence
WASHINGTON (Obviously depends on how far you go):
Seattle- a very cool place to visit. We did so many things here- an underground tour (parts of the city were just built on top of the old city), Pike Place Market, etc. It is a very walkable city.
Mount Rainier- may be too early for this. When we went the wildflowers were blooming and fragrant on the mountain while there was snow all around them. That was more in summer though.
Olympic National Park has it all. Waterfalls, the ocean, tide pools, mountains, rain forests.......
California (I lied):
A "small" detour from Route 5 is Sequoia National Park. One of the most incredible places I have ever been. No picture/video could ever relay the awesomeness of these trees. Anyone interested in nature/geology would find this place interesting.
Ugh, I'm really jonesing for a vacation.
