Rockoonz , TheRock and anyone else who uses more than one machine-- I have only ever actually seen one other person cab- with a genie. Apparently, I don't know much. I can't even imagine having the room for more than one machine let alone use more than one. I just thank goodness for spin on wheels. Maybe one day I'll have a proper shop like Duke. Tela, A damn good thing I made money and sold my Tractor Collection, collector Items, and parts at a good price, or it wouldn't have happened. Its a lot easier moving rocks around now than Garden Tractors!

Are these decals being placed on the back of the cab and then the dop stick attached to the decals? Chuck Yes. all slabs are cleaned with Alcohol real good and dried to remove any contaminants Oil from the 10in Barranca Diamond saw, Dirt Grime, and then the decal is applied. It does well through the cutting on my wet saw and pre grinding. Then I clean decal with alcohol again dry and Install the double sided sticky tape to the Dop Stick End and then to the cab. Its amazing how well it sticks to the Vinyl Decal. easy to remove with a razor blade under the vinyl, peel up and remove leaves no debris of wax or contaminants.

What brand of tape does Steve use for his dops? I was using a 3m tape, liked it but switched to Gorilla and like it better. I have one of those dome maker, never ended up using it because by the time I had a place to set it up I had virtually stopped making standard oval cabs. Out of hundreds I have probably only made a dozen ovals, and would only make one if replacing a stone for someone. There's a lapidary I know from the Seattle area who cuts cabs start to finish on a flat lap, he holds the dop and turns his wrist like the machine to form his domes. interesting to watch, he's in his 80's and he can rough shape a cab in 2 or 3 minutes by his method. Again, it's only good for ovals and similar shapes. I think it is 3M 4016 Double Coated Foam Tape 1" I have not tried a Cab Yet without the Vinyl patterns I have been using. But it really has been working well for me.

Dude, your hooked now! Great 1st try, liking that cab! Yep, its starting to come together now once you make something and are successful doing it, you start having fun. And what do you do when your having fun? You want to do more of it. and you end up pushing yourself further to make something better unique and you expand your knowledge.

Oh and you’re doing great with the dome! The whole girdle thing seems to be mixed preference.

What if you cant get a dome on the Cab because the slab wasn't cut thick enough? I will cut thicker next time but I hate throwing 40 of these away.

I've seen low dome agate cabs made from 1/16th slabs, and I've bought (not made) small pieces that finished less than 0.4mm thick - made on flat laps with just a simple bevel around the edges and dome that is so low as to be almost imperceptible to the eye. Seen thin pieces like that regularly used in high-end jewelry too. Thicker and thinner, tiny and big all have their places.

First things first . . . how thick are those 40 of these? Well I lied...... I guessed 40 but I counted them today and there is 24 of them that are .171 thickness 1/4" is .250 so a lil more than 1/2 of what it should be not enough to make a good dome I tried.

If you have a flat lap, do a flat cab, maybe even put a hole in it for a pendant. Oh wait- you have the intarsia machine- you can use that.

Yeah I hate throwing them away cause the stones are nice lookin. I can see scratches in them like Tommy was talking about and how hard it is when there is a flat spot which yeah there is a big one on these. I plan on running them through a 220 thru .3 micron polish. I did some stones that were around .315 and was able to get a nice dome on them when I get my saw back up and running I will error on the side of over 1/4" cause I can make em look good when I have material to work with. I gave them a nice girdle too. It's alot easier when you have some material to work with! Thanks Tela

You just need a little practice, Duke. I cut all my slabs 0.200 (four turns on the crossfeed) and have no problem doming two-inch and two-and-a-half-inch ovals. Ballpark, maybe a third of that 0.200 is girdle, so the dome is only using about 0.140. It does get a little more time consuming and finicky if it’s a three-inch cab.

Another option is to add them to a vibe tumbler batch and make a load of tumbler cab pendants, then drill or groove wrap. Our tumble pendants have been popular with the beaders at the holiday bazaars and shows, nice focal stones.

I may need to go back to welding school or sumptin .

TheRockThanks for sharing your experiences, so far, with the Auto Cab Machine. I have been looking at this for a long time. For me, it might be a great way to mount/stabilize a cab for using the Dremel. Now I am securing the Dremel and applying the cab ti it by hand. Do you know if attachments for any other shapes are in the works? If I was using it just for securing the cabs, would it be possible to just secure different shapes to the oval attachments?
