This is a video that might be useful to people new to tumbling. It attempts to answer many common questions that come up on this forum, especially from beginners. The tumbling method uses both a rotary and vibratory tumbler. Most people start with just a rotary tumbler, but the most misunderstood step of rotary tumbling is the first one. This video explains that first step in depth (maybe too much depth!).

Thank you for this great video and for permission to post it here in the Tutorials section. I personally watched the entire video and learned a lot. Honestly it made me want to dust off my 6-6 and get it rolling again.

I was watching the video (took about an hour with breaks) and had to come find it to post. Seriously, who looks in here...? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Rob... Thanks for the great thread. Enjoyed watching the whole thing. "Don't use your toothbrush for this, this is my wife's." Laughed out loud at that! I believe you inspired me to start playing with my rocks again.
I was bored with 'em, but after watching your video, realize that I kinda miss it. I am down to three tumblers running, BUT ... Haven't checked them in a LONG time. Two of them have been running untouched since February 2018 (really, 14 months - they are rather dusty!), and the third I last checked on October 7th - 6 months ago. *snicker* Just didn't care about tumbling anymore. I think taking a year off from tumbling has given me a nice break and it may be time to get some fresh material rolling. If I can find any rocks around here! Enjoyed the video, Great job putting it together. The time involved is appreciated. Nice batch of lace BTW... And thank you for the inspiration.

This particular thread was created for the specific purpose of having staff move it into the tutorials. Rob said he also posted the video in his other crazylace thread and asked if we wanted this as a stand-alone tutorial, and of course I jumped at it. I'll let him decide if he thinks it should stand over there for a while given that the video is posted there already. |

It doesn't matter to me, Tommy. I felt kind of funny posting this twice, but it had to be done to make it better for the tutorials section. It's fine with me if we leave it in the tumbling area for a while and move it in a week or so. Absolutely no need to feel funny about it Rob - it's an excellent work you've done and deserves to be in multiple places. Since it's already here and folks are seeing the thread here based on the # of views still growing steadily - how about I leave this one alone and we give your other thread a bump? |

This is my 1st video on this forum and I am hooked! Its been 40 years since my last lapidary class and I'm trying to remember what to do with all this wonderful new equipment I own. On the last polish and burnish steps, are you changing the ceramic out to new or rinsing that too? Thanks for the great lesson!

I'm certainly not the expert but I would not change or add new ceramic media at any of the later steps. I keep the same ceramic throughout the entire process or if I have to add more at a later step, it has already been through all the steps and actually looks polished.

Wow, Jugglerguy, thank you for making this video. It answered a lot of my questions; Like when is the first tumble done enough. I should have watched it earlier, because over the weekend I was in an excited hurry to get my rocks out of their tumble, and into my new vibe. The rocks should have spent longer in the rotary. But they can now, because my vibe batch was a disaster. I've got more learning to do. |

Thanks for making this video, it is very helpful. I've watched several of your videos over the past few years and have always enjoyed them.
I'm wondering if you use dedicated barrels for each stage (is your lortone 12lb dedicated to stage one, and do you use different Lot-Os for 120/500/polish? or do you feel comfortable with a general cleaning?)
You were ok leaving some smaller pores/holes and vugs which was both interesting and comforting. I've always been paranoid about any single hole. I imagine them trapping tons of fine SiC pieces and contaminating the polish stages. I either DQ rocks or send them to the grinder if I see any at all. But that didnt seem to happen for a few with small holes, so the light rinsing and brushing (which I wouldnt expect to reach deep into the holes?) seemed perfectly sufficient.
Now I have to see if there is a tutorial for building a tumbler cabinet! That setup is super cool!
Really nice stones. It is always good to have your advice and experience, thank you!

Bump for the new noobees who have lots'o'questions ...like me, for instance !  Does Jugglerguy have a similar video specific to the RayTech or the Thumbler 10 pounder Vibe with recipe for fill amounts and grit and borax ? I have looked and cannot find. I have been using the amounts suggested in replies to my earlier newbie RT10 thread and so far so good. The images in this video of how the rocks should look at various stages as far as shiny, sticky etc were very helpful even though they were in the "wrong" machine! |
