I am trying to find the price per gram of a finished cab of covellite. I can find it for rough, but not a cab. Or, is there such a thing? Is there a website that has gram values of gems (not faceted gems)?

The only one I could find real quick was a cab Sam Silverhawk cut. 85 carats (17 grams) sold for $139 or a little over $8 a gram.

I found a couple of not-so-great cabs (IMHO) that had an asking price of about $13/gram. Just did a quick search.

I am trying to find the price per gram of a finished cab of covellite. I can find it for rough, but not a cab. Or, is there such a thing? Is there a website that has gram values of gems (not faceted gems)? There are several price guides that include a wide variety of gems, but I'm not aware of any online databases that are open. Mostly, they are for appraisers, jewelers and insurers and published by gemology organizations ( ISG, Gemworld, GIA, Gemval, etc.) for their members or subscribers. Used to also be some periodic newsletters sent out, but not sure they still exist. For colored gems in general, these guides are rough estimates at best. For something like covellite, value is going to be based on how well it is cut, how well the optical phenomenon displays (blue and violet color flashes), scarcity, and similar factors. There isn't a one-price-fits-all like there is for less variable gems such as white diamonds that sell in huge quantities (yeah, why do people think they are "rare"?). They also seem to be constantly out of date and who knows how often they re-survey the market for colored gems. So that brings us back to the same frustrating situation of you handling the stone, looking at roughly comparables (and hoping the pics and descriptions online are accurate) and deciding on what you'd take for it using that as a guide

Did a search and prices are all over the place from around a $1g on up depending in part where it came from. Here is site with various cabs. No gram weight given but they do give sizes so you can get in the ballpark: www.barlowsgems.net/covellite-cabochons/

Thanks everyone. I know a lot of factors go into the price of a cab, I was just wondering if there was an easy guide. I know what rough goes for. I guess I should go off that. I found some rough that I forgot about. I got it super cheap and can not sell it at that price! LOL! But, I do know what the going rate for rough is.

Set a price and I bet it flies out the door, just like your other cabs do! Thumbs up....
