rockjunquie I'm excited for you first a drill now a tumbler - you're going all in it seems I'm brand new to my Lot-O and except for the failed motor thing which they took care of with ease, I LOVE my Lot-O and compared to my old 10 lb Gemstone vibe tumbler it's night and day. It's small and 100% quieter than what I was used to and change outs are a breeze. Just to address the setup thing for a minute - as Chuck said there is more to it than taking it out of the box and turning it on but don't let this scare you off. Mine came with a sheet of very high bond double sided foam tape for sticking the base down to a smooth surface. After doing some reading about it I went with a standard double hole 8x16 cinder block reportedly weighing between 30-35 lbs. For me the setup was as easy as picking up a cinder block, setting it on my work bench, painting one 16" long surface white with some paint I had laying around, letting it dry then setting the tumbler on the block. I don't know if the extra few pounds of weight they recommend would have made the tumbler act differently but it is what it is. The block doesn't move around and I'm happy with how it's going so far.

Just ordered the Lot-O with extra grit. I know there were other brands mentioned, but it seems like the majority were into Lot-O. I caught a nasty cold- of course, since the weather just turned hot- not been feeling real motivated, but I have the energy to be excited about my tumbler! Can't wait! Hope this crud is short lived. Ugh. I rummage some bricks and paint in the next few days and get ready. Thanks for all the help and opinions... and the PMs. I'm sure I'll have more questions.

I have a mini sonic and a lot-o and prefer the lot-o of those two. Glad to hear you are going to give tumbling a whirl. I have never tried tumbling jewelry in a vibe. I always use a dedicated rotary barrel and stainless shot for that. Have you heard a vibe will be better for jewelry? While I highly recommend a loto I will warn that the initial setup is more difficult. The loto needs to be mounted to a 40 pound cement block to keep the vibrations correct. There are several detailed posts on here about mounting methods, Chuck Sorry, Chuck. I should have been more clear. I want to tumble small stones for pendants and earrings. I have a drill now. I was hoping to shape and tumble polish. BikerRandy did quickie jewelry with a vibrating tumbler and it was really impressive. I know you're not talking about the same thing exactly, but I like to tumble up small stones. Not really shaped in any way and not meant for jewelry, but they represent a running history of about every material I've tumbled. It was mostly saw scraps and busted pieces from breaking down material. I dumped a Tupperware container full of them out on the floor for some quick pics. Nothing to reference the size of the pile of rocks, except my leg cast.
Quite a variety of stuff
It's fun to run your hands through a big pile like this.

That's a good idea. They look great and they are your own encyclopedia.

I save all my chips and little scraps to use for filler instead of ceramics. When I accumulate too many, I sell them by the pound at craft shows.

Good for you Tella not the Puker problems, but the Rock Tumbler The Lot"O" is a fine choice for the small ones. Tumbler I mean. The next in my opinion would be a UV-10 and then a UV-18. Personally I like the UV-18 cause when 10 lbs come out of the Thumbler B its a great fit to go right into the UV-18 with 220 Grit. What are you going to use to round and shape the stones?

I have two Thumler B's feeding one Thumler UV-18 (which has loafing time because the B's can't tumble enough stone to keep it busy). No issues with either the B or the UV-18.
