Either there is a lot of petwood around or there are no other rockhounds. But you sure did well on your trip. I love petwood

great find pho! and love the sign - how'd you do that and are they rough or polished?
rollingstone i was kinda bothered that the grass is coming on so as that means getting the mowers out so soon but i have 2nd thoughts after looking at your pic.

That is natural pet woon on the sign...didn't shine it up at all...but after taking that pic..wife and I were thinking about what the sign would look like in polished stone or pet wood.

what did you do make a mold of the state of texas, fill it with concrete and put you stones all in it? i'm assuming they go all the way through?

To make the sign, this is what I did:
Make a cut out of the state you wish to work on out of plywood
around the outside edge of the plywood, nail some tin about i and 1/2 inch deep or 2 inch deep depending on how heavy you want the sign to be.
lay two re-bar pieces in the sign and pour cement to fill the form.
Place the rocks on top of the cement and slightly push in to set them good..let it dry for two or three days..
Pop the sign out of the form and stick it in the ground.
The re-bar will give it some strength and give you something to put in the ground to hold up the sign. I made the re-bar stick out about 18 inches.
I did make a bunch of those but did not put in the rocks. I painted the sign like the Texas flag and sold them for 15 bucks each....
The one I did for my own yard ( the one in the pic) is a one of a kind.

Oh you are so not sorry ... ;D ;D ;D ;D
That pet wood is beautiful, especially that big piece. Looks like some wonderful colors in it. You're very lucky to find it that easy, wish I could find more of it up here. Nice bunch you have there, get to polishing man! Oh, that sign is way cool too!

Nice job hunting. This is the first week in along time that I have not gone on a hunt, my shoulder is giving me problems. I've found places even here in MN to go hunting during the winter, you just have to work alittle harder. Great specimens. Brenda

Great pet. wood find.
My husband brought back a 5 gallon bucket of pet wood pieces from Texas that looks similar. I seems a bit different from my other pet wood, quite a bit softer, but more texture. Softer than a nail but harder than a penny. Could it be limestone that replaced the wood?
Tumbled a little just to sort of clean it up and round it off. I noticed it shrinks a lot even if I start them in step 2. Any advice on how to tumble this. I'm assumeing I won't get it real shiny but I'd be happy to settle for a slight shine or satiny finish. I was planning on just doing it up to the tripoli step then a little hand buffing.

With my pet wood, I do all the normal steps and so far it has come out very shiny. I too lose a little on each rock in the 60/90 but that is normal.

I love the colors in the large piece ...I was working last night on some similar wood from New Mexico , not as much color, My pieces ar edusty colored when dry , But in the center of the photo are some pieces wetted and crosscut, lots of mahogony color shows. I think too fragile for tumbling but will make nice displays...On the right are a couple of geodes I cut open.

You got quite a find there, have fun. Speaking of weather we are finally warm after having a week of cold, one day of ice/snow, one day of rain and yesterday morning we had fog and drizzle. Tami

Gotta love them geodes....
I have tumbled only small pieces of the pet wood so far. Thinking about getting some of the bigger chunks slabbed...wanna see what they would look like.

That's one heck of load for one days collectinf Pho!! I especially like the state of Texas you made but being one of those "nothhern friends" you talked about I didn't need the comment about the grass!! LOL Here's a photo I made up as a joke for one of our "southern friends".It's supposed to be of me and my wife Nancy in our driveway on Groundhog Day. Tom ;D
