OK, this time what they are doing will help me, but I pity the people who sell heavier items.
Etsy is now practically forcing people into offering free shipping. They will even have tools to make it easier for you to do it. A while back, they started floating the idea that you should have FS. I guess not enough people took the hint. Now, ppl with FS will have better search rankings. That will really knock out those that charge for shipping. I can understand the reasoning behind FS, but punishing those whose shops can not offer free shipping is horrible! Vintage seller are gonna take a hit- AGAIN.
Whatever happened to independent shops? If they either strong arm you or punish you, do you really have a choice?
UGH! I just saw this too....
I had heard Etsy was making this move earlier in the year, so for the fun of it, I switched over to FS for a few months to "test the waters." Free Shipping made absolutely NO difference in the number of sales I received. I switched back to calculated shipping and I've done... better? It's so strange.
I've been taking a long look at the fees that Etsy charges - it's about 20-25% (because I use promoted listings as well) - and I'm really considering opening a store with Shopify and just moving away from Etsy. This makes me nervous, because Etsy analytics say that 80% of the sales come from internal Etsy searches, but the cynic in me really doubts the accuracy of their statistics.
I'm at a cross-roads, because my presence on Etsy is so enormous that trying to shift my entire follower base to a new shopping platform would be horrendous - but I do think I'd take a hit for sure.
Thoughts on Shopify??

I have a good friend with shopify and etsy. Her standalone shopify is dead. But, she doesn't spend the enormous hours it takes to drive traffic, either. The set up was time consuming, too. I have a standalone. I use etsy to drive traffic to my shop. Make them work for ME. LOL! My standalone does ok, could be better, but I don't invest a lot of time trying to drive traffic and do NO socials. It's all about driving traffic. I think you will find that a lot of people will not make the jump to your shop. People feel safer with etsy and will just find another etsy shop.
I would love to leave, too. Etsy is getting expensive. I have ads, too- you almost have to. What a really hate is getting a big sale and then getting a small deposit the next day after all their fees and such. I'd rather pay by the month again. Perception thing.

Thanks so much for your insight! It's definitely something I'd need to mull on further. There's a monthly fee for Shopify as well, so there's that.
I did Ebay in the past and made the switch to Etsy when Ebay got crazy with it's fees - was very happy with that, but it just seems that Etsy is now turning into Ebay and I'd really like more control on how I'd prefer to do things, rather than bend to the will of Etsy and how they feel I should do business

Most of my web experience is as a buyer and project how I like to buy to how I sell. I like free shipping and offer free shipping. I haven't figured out if Etsy is set up for combining shipping. In my small sampling of orders, it has been 1.5 items to an order.
I'm atypical as an Etsy seller. Most of my inventory is sunk costs. Time and material doesn't factor very much and my goal is not a side business only selling enough to cover equipment and supplies. My attitude toward Etsy would be a lot different if I were running a business and having a goal of an hourly wage.

Well, I guess the new Free Shipping Tools are now ready, because I just got a HUGE pop-up in my shop.

I have been looking into Shopify. Could not find if there is a commission fee on sales in addition to the monthly fees.
