Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad’s Completion

Key Definitions

On Display – In addition to day-long display hours, display days include access to the Experience the Union Pacific Rail Car. Special-edition Big Boy and Golden Spike souvenirs also are available for sale from the merchandise tent. Admission to display days are free. These are the best times to see the Big Boy.

Viewing Only – Locations where fans can safely view the Big Boy. In some cases, the Big Boy will be displayed behind a fence or other perimeter. Unlike display days, the Experience the Union Pacific Rail Car will not be available for tours and merchandise will not be sold. Unless otherwise noted on the schedule, all stops are "viewing only" locations.

Passenger Excursion – While listed on the steam schedule, passenger excursion tickets are sold by outside entities -- not Union Pacific -- and are not available on the day of the excursion.

No Public Access – Locations where the public is not allowed to view the Big Boy because of safety or security reasons. This usually means the locomotive will be stored within a rail yard or other Union Pacific property where live rail operations are being conducted. Non-employees who access these locations without permission will be treated as trespassers.

Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad’s Completion

Union Pacific’s historic Big Boy steam locomotive No. 4014 is touring the Union Pacific system throughout 2019 to commemorate the transcontinental railroad's 150th anniversary.

The Big Boy’s return to the rails is the product of more than two years of meticulous restoration work by the Union Pacific Steam Team. No. 4014 is the world's only operating Big Boy locomotive.

Due to the dynamic nature of these operations, running times and scheduled stops are subject to change. The most accurate steam schedule information always will be located on this page.

The Great Race Across the Southwest

For the final time this year, the Big Boy No. 4014 will ride the rails on the Union Pacific system, taking it through Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Wyoming. Unless otherwise noted on the schedule, all stops are "viewing only" locations.

ST. GEORGE — A six-vehicle crash in Beryl may have had something to do with the world’s largest steam locomotive, Union Pacific’s”Big Boy,” which rolled through the small town Saturday afternoon.

A battery of emergency personnel were dispatched to a six-vehicle pileup on a frontage road that runs parallel to train tracks in Beryl. Emergency crews found the tangled vehicles scattered across the roadway, including a Ford pickup truck, three SUVs, a vintage car and a passenger car.

One occupant was flown to a nearby hospital by Mercy Air Transport, primarily due to possible back/neck injuries while at least one more individual was transported to the hospital by ground ambulance for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Iron County Sheriff’s Deputy Jon Bettridge told St. George News Saturday.

Traffic on the frontage road was heavier than normal with a large number of spectators there to see the “special train,” Bettridge said.

Multiple vehicles were towed from the scene, and it took several hours to clear the roadway and remove debris.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing, Bettridge said, and police are working to “figure out what happened and exactly how it happened.”

The newly-restored locomotive was returning from a stop in Ogden, where a ceremony was held commemorating the anniversary. It was continuing its historic journey to Las Vegas, Nevada when it passed through Beryl Saturday.

The 123-foot Big Boy is huge, weighing in at more than 1.2 million pounds with massive engines. The train typically operated between Ogden and Cheyenne, Wyoming.

With the onset of World War II, twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific, the first of which was delivered in 1941 to handle the steep terrain between Cheyenne and Ogden. The locomotive was retired in December 1961 after 20 years of service and more than 1 million miles. Of the eight still in existence, No. 4014 is the world’s only operating Big Boy.

In 2013, Union Pacific re-acquired No. 4014 from the RailGiants Museum in Pomona, California, before it was relocated to Cheyenne, Wyoming to begin a multi-year restoration process. It was then returned to service in May 2019 to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad’s Completion.

1dave, boy does that make me feel old! I was the head of publicity for the Utah Travel Council's observance of the Golden Spike Centennial 50 years ago. It's hard to believe that much time has passed, seems almost like yesterday.

I was young and full of juice at the time. My team generated a huge amount of publicity for the event. My biggest surprise was the amazing number of railroad fanatics who helped turn the event into a great success. They came out of the woodwork and were an interesting group of people.

I love anything old train related.

Have an original photo of the "famous" Cornfield Crash, which occurred near where I grew up. According to my Mom, there were two rail companies who were competing for the same tracks. Info on which train would be where was telegraphed to the stations. The rails would be relocated by hand and access to where there was to be an oncoming train blocked.

On this fateful day, one company issued a bribe to a young station manager. They felt their locomotive was superior and could withstand anything. They told the young lad, that if he ignored their coming, he would be greatly rewarded. His rewards were to include a gold pocket watch, a team of good draft horses and a new wagon. They would also give him some gold coins and a new gun. It was too much temptation for the young man. He told no one at the time. He saw the Eastbound train pass, knowing what would happen soon. About 20 miles later, both trains collided, full speed, in a corn field. There were many fatalities. 8 people and 30 cows perished. One train was hauling a few cars of cows.
The coal man, engineer and caboose man survived. They were on the supposed inferior train.
Neither train had any people passengers that day. Just freight, most which was a total loss.

People came from around the county to help or see what happened. Some took freight or dead cows. Eventually officials from each rail company arrived. The photo I have shows officials from the supposed inferior rail company posing in front of the mess.

As of 2010, it was still the worst train accident the county had ever seen.

I do not have time now, but will try to find and scan the photo.

A Maricopa Sheriff came after me the other day for going out back of the old Union Railroad Station/
I was feeling nostalgic and recall the time my Noni took me for railroad ride on the train to Wickenburg
It was big time!

Then there was the story of the escaped German soldier
from Papago Park who stopped in the downtown Chinese Restaurant for quick bite to eat.
He asked where the Union Rail Road station was? They grew suspicious and called the Maricopa Sheriff.
He went back to Papago.

The station was only 4 blocks away. Bad luck.
I know all about it. Think I was him in previous life.

The most interesting train trip I've taken in recent years was from Skagway, Alaska, over White Pass. The old-fashioned rail cars (with modern amenities) not only offer amazing scenic views but the train route is an engineering marvel. It's so narrow sometimes you feel as if you're about to plunge off the tracks into the deep canyon below.

You've all seen the famous old pictures of Yukon-bound gold prospectors struggling to get their equipment up White Pass in the dead of winter. The train was built to eliminate that terrible ordeal but required some gutsy, dangerous construction work. Much of the most challenging work was done in the winter of 1898-99.

The White Pass & Yukon Route has been designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, putting it in the good company of such landmarks as the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, and the Panama Canal.

If you visit Skagway do not miss this amazing side trip.

Yep This is new addition to Phoenix

I was fairly skeptical of it
But Its pretty good and
I use it all the time!
Especially to go to the library

The train stop is just stone throw from my location

2 dollars for an all day elderly pass
unfortunately I don’t qualify yet
as you have to be 60
but I cheat -and no one called me on, yet

So this Saturday I was waiting on the rail
And I nicer older couple
asked if this was the way to Phoenix?
I said yes.

They were standing there and I could tell they were out place .
So I asked: are you visiting?
Yes were from Scotland.
We want to go downtown to see what Phoenix is like

Well after small talk I talked them out of going downtown
It really is dead.

(But that going to change as 10,000 apartment units are being built )

I talked them into going to Tempe Mill Ave,
College town.

So we boarded the rail together and took the ride.
I was pointing out the Hohokam enxampemtement,
Torverea castle, Superstitions, Papago Buttes, Salt River, Tempe Town Lakes.

We got off at Tempe & strolled Mill avenue, It was lively !
Lots of people. There was bicycle marathon taking place and lot of folks
w/ Halloween costumes.

I pointed out few good eateries & then bidded my goodbyes to them/

I'll miss those folks!
I made Phoenix a much more pleasant experience for them
The place can come off as a concrete jungle
But there are lots of lost interesting nooks & crannies....

It was bit before my time
But I do recall the tracks when
Grandma took me downtown to shop

The one thing my Scotland friends were mentioning
Was how clean Phoenix looked to them
That was nice to hear.

I guess Scotland as a mold problem
And things are considerably older

I was talking about the agates of Scotland
But they had visited Sedona
And were blown away by the red rocks

Back in the day, when my kids were little (30yrs ago), I collected HO scale and a few G-scale model trains........even built a few 8' x 10' track layouts. Sold all but one of the layouts, which were (2) attached with hinges to one inside wall my 3 car garage..........anyway, still have quite a few HO models stored in boxes put away for the kids's kids. Some are valuable, like the Athearn and Hornby-Rivarrossi Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy's I kept.......one of my favorites, they both can pull grade with a dozen or more cars strung behind..........just like their real life Daddy..........lol

And I Thought Rocks Had No Personality

Time is so curious! In 1945 we bought a 100 year old house in Austin Texas.
100 years? That seemed to be forever ago.

During serious accidents moments drag out, seeming like hours.

Now in my 80's a hundred years doesn't seem much more than the blink of an eye.

Here is another somewhat documented story.

A good family friend was into everything logging. My Uncle and I spent many hours with him, searching for logging camps and rails from yesteryear. He published a book, called Rails Within the Pinery. I have the book somewhere. It documented the many rail companies who established tracks in NW Wisconsin. These rails made logging so much easier.

One of the companies built a crude, 20' high bridge to cross a small lake/swamp. The lake was shallow, but known for having quicksand, as were many wet areas in the area. One day a heavily loaded train, with about 25 cars was crossing the bridge. The bridge collapsed. The entire train and workers disappeared, never to be found.
According to our friend, most of the cars contained logs. The others were a mix of cattle and grain. There were 4 workers on the train.

As a child, my school bus stopped across from that small lake. I was always mystified by it. The lake was only about 5 acres in size, surrounded by another 10 acres of swamp. The lake is located on a 2 mile, gravel road that exits and then enters a County road via a semicircle. One residence on that road.

Our friend included some photos of the bridge and a fully loaded train crossing it in the book.

I am sure there are many more stories about ill fated trains in the early days, but had to share this one.

I used to play along a leg of the old Spruce Railway where there were trees 15 feet through.
All I ever found was a bunch of old railroad spikes.

Spruce Production Division

"In 1918, during World War I, almost thirty thousand U.S. soldiers were assigned to the Spruce Production Division (SPD) as part of the federal Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen (4L), a government-created union of loggers and sawmill owners formed to counteract widespread labor strikes by workers in the industry. The soldiers were charged with cutting Sitka spruce for airplanes and Douglas-fir for ships, protecting sawmills from sabotage, and fighting forest fires.

As early as 1916, the Pacific Northwest was the primary supplier of wood for aircraft frames to Great Britain, France, and Italy. The most important tree species for airplane construction was the Sitka spruce, a conifer that grew along the coastal rivers of northern California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska. Sitka spruce, Brig. Gen. Brice P. Disque reported in 1919, “qualified better than any other wood in a combination of the necessary qualities of lightness, strength, resiliency, long and tough fibre and would not splinter when struck by a rifle bullet.”

On May 7, 1917, General Disque had been summoned to Washington, D.C., to study labor unrest in the Pacific Northwest. That summer, loggers and lumbermen who were members of the most powerful unions in the region—the Industrial Workers of the World and the American Federation of Labor—went on strike, halting much of the logging in regional forests. "Labor conditions were indescribably bad,” the official history of the Spruce Production Division reports. The striking workers wanted an eight-hour workday and better working and living conditions, historian Robert Tyler writes, including "sixty dollars a month…to be paid on two regular paydays per month….[bed]springs, mattresses, and bedding in all logging camps, showers and laundry rooms, hiring through union halls...free transportation to the job." The timber companies rejected the strikers’ demands.

To ensure that lumber would continue to be available for war-related industries, Disque recommended that the government station soldiers in the woods. To get the work done, the army established the 4L and managed it for a year before turning it over to civilian authorities.

General Disque wanted soldiers for the SPD who had experience working in the woods, but it soon became clear that there were not enough experienced men available. So the SPD began taking men who were physically fit but not eligible for the regular army, such as those who were illiterate. In all, more than a hundred thousand loggers and mill workers eventually joined the SPD to work in forests throughout the Pacific Northwest, including Idaho and western Montana.

Division headquarters was in the Yeon Building in downtown Portland; and Vancouver Barracks, on the Columbia River in Washington, was the main operational center for receiving, training, and disbursing the soldiers to regional forests and mills. More than 230 spruce soldier camps were located throughout the Pacific Northwest.

A number of private logging and sawmill owners requested that the soldiers be stationed at their camps and sawmills to help forestall another general strike and to decrease industrial sabotage and slowdowns. In addition to a number of smaller logging operations, the companies that requested soldiers included Grant, Smith-Porter Brothers in Clatsop County, Warren Spruce in Lincoln County, and the Airplane Lumber Company in Lincoln County.

While some soldiers worked in sawmill and logging operations, others were assigned to prevent sabotage and to counter non-4L union organizing efforts. Each camp had standard sleeping facilities, latrines, bathing and eating facilities, and recreation rooms, and soldiers worked a forty-hour workweek—conditions denied to striking workers in 1917. They were paid the same wage that loggers were paid, which protected the army from charges of strikebreaking. Many of the improvements in working conditions made during this time influenced the timber industry long after the SPD program ended.

There were no highways along the coast or over the Coast Range, and the Spruce Production Division proposed building railroads to serve isolated harvesting areas. The railroad construction program called for the completion of thirteen railroads in Washington and Oregon, with 173 miles of main line and 181 miles of tributary lines. Spruce railroad numbers 8 through 13 were built in Oregon: railroads 8 and 9 in Clatsop County, 10 through 12 in Lincoln County, and 13 in Coos County.

Over seventy-five hundred soldiers were assigned to three Oregon districts: Clatsop (3,342), Yaquina (3,370), and Coos Bay (870). Most of the men stationed at the nineteen SPD camps in Oregon worked in the forests to cut Sitka spruce and Douglas-fir, build railroad lines and bridges, and construct roads. In the summer of 1918, many SPD soldiers built roads that could transport the long spruce logs to sawmills at Yaquina in Oregon and at Port Angeles and Vancouver Barracks in Washington. During the fifteen months that the Spruce Production Division existed, solders contributed 53,718,591 board feet of high-quality aircraft-grade lumber (total production was 143,008,961 board feet).

With the end of World War I, on November 11, 1918, construction of the spruce railroads halted and SPD workers stopped felling trees. SPD soldiers were sent to Vancouver Barracks for discharge, and equipment and machinery were removed from logging sites for later sale. Equipment worth millions of dollars, some of it never used, was sold at auction in the fall of 1919 for pennies on the dollar, giving lumber companies such as C.D. Johnson a huge economic advantage over their competition and jump starting coastal logging operations with low-cost railroads, bridges, and new sawmill operations."
