I love this stone that I got from rockjunquie . I like the wrap. But I think I failed on the bail- I didn't leave enough wire to do what I had in mind. Decisions, decisions... Thanks for looking!

If a cord or chain will fit through the bail, then it's fine. I like it.

If a cord or chain will fit through the bail, then it's fine. I like it. Thanks. It will fit, but the front is just messy looking. But the stone is so gorgeous I'm not sure I did it justice. I've never really been much of a perfectionist- I think this hobby is changing me!

We are all our own worse critics.

I like the simple bail.

I'm gonna have to agree with you here, miket. I think the front is a little messy, too. If it were me, I'd take it apart and start over. I have a whole ziploc bad full of I don't like how I did that wire. Save the wire with your scrap and move on. It is a beautiful stone and if you're not happy with how the wrap turned out, change it.
I always over estimate how much wire I need because I hate being caught short. It's a little wasteful, but you pop those odd bits in the scrap bag, too and turn them in when you have a enough to get more wire.

I think I am going to do it again. I'm just not satisfied with the way it is now. Thanks!

I generally take a piece of tape around the perimeter of the cab, lay it down on a piece of paper and give myself about 2- 2 1/2 inches on each end for the bail and/or extras. I may not need all of it but if I do, I have it.

Another lesson learned! Thanks for the trick I may try that...

I use 3" additional on each side. The cab is about an inch high... The additional amount is for the bail, so the height of the stone is less important. Except if you have a big stone, you may want a bigger bail.

One last question- I know two different colors of wire isn't your style, but I'm thinking of switching to gold instead of copper for this one. Any thoughts?

I use 3" additional on each side. The cab is about an inch high... What Tela said. I use 3" only because I almost always do a woven bail and I like to make them a little bigger to fit a bit thicker chain with a bigger clasp in case someone has one of those. You'll figure out how much wire you're comfortable with with experience.
I like the copper with this stone. It complements the color in between the breccia, at least in the picture on my computer.

True, if you want a bigger or fancier bail, you'll need more wire. I was just saying for a simple wrap. Also, if you want to add other elements, you'll need more wire. But yeah, agreed, 2-3 inches on each end sounds about right.

Nice looking wrap Mike. The stone is amazing, but the wrap really compliments it very well. I can tell that a lot of work went in to this one. And the bail is really nice looking!
[edit] I had no idea the stone was so small (1 " only). In that case, this is a fantastic job wrapping it. Really well done. Those small ones are the hardest by far.

Thanks for the compliment, Bill. I tore it apart this morning, hopefully I'll get time to wrap it again this afternoon. I just didn't like how it looked in front of the bail.
