Thanks you guys. That's the end of my dog(my kids) drama hopefully for a long time. One more, my next door neighbor's kid died suddenly last week at 42 from a brain bleed. He was my buddy when he was young. He grew into a fine high school athlete, 230 pounds and ran a 4.5 40 yards. Had a college scholarship and broke his ankle summer before college and never could play. Successful, self employed, 4 kids, cute wife, all a shame. James, I missed this yesterday.
I'm really sorry for your loss. It sounds like y'all had a special relationship. It seem true that only the good die young. I hope you can find another kid to mentor.

Why do I have to live in the yellow-orange area? Oh, because I love living in Wisconsin. It is snowing pretty heavy now. At least I am not working until Saturday.

Thanks for your condolences Tela. No one wants to see the young have a shortened life. Matt had a large showing at his funeral but the real part is that he is gone. Life is tough.

It finally quit raining today 01.19.2023 So I went for a walk down into the forest to hug my favorite tree An old Western Hemlock about 5 feet wide at the stump Anyway, The reason why I think it is so Big, Strong and Resilient Is because it is growing on top of an ancient Gravel bed full of Agates and Jasper

Hi jamesp James was Matt one of the helpers on the fire pits ect... ? no need to answer knohs how much these human issues concern you He was not working with me Ed. He went out on his own and built a rather large land grading business. Moved away. Had 4 kids. Lost track of him after that. There was a large crowd at his funeral. A man with many friends and much respect no doubt. Made it sad though. Looks like I will need to keep an eye on his father since he has been stricken with dementia recently. It is Matt's Mom that worries us, she has had a difficult time with all these events. Two of his sisters live close by can help his Mom out with his Dad. That stork is a trip. He sure has a big beak. And a big bird at 5 feet tall !

Beautiful tree, amygdule ! Next time you're there, give it a hug for me, too. I wish I had a picture of the pin oak they cut down across the street the other day. It was ginormous! It must have been 90 feet or better. It mad me VERY sad to see it go. No good reason for it, either. Healthy as a horse. They'll be coming for mine soon, I'm sure.

RickBI wish we had a regular wood stove instead of a pellet stove. A 40 pound bag of wood pellets cost over $8 now. That only lasts about a day. Plus the pellet stove is dependent on electricity. You cant cook on them during a power outage.

That's just wrong. Tela: "I wish I had a picture of the pin oak they cut down across the street the other day." Pin oaks limbs are a PIA to handle and hang straight to the ground. And drops limbs constantly. Worse than thorns, the branch tips are like razors. GOOD RIDDANCE and great for firewood ! Check out these bamboo cooking containers, it is an Asian/Indian practice where they are stuffed with rice and a medley of meats veggies spices and cooked right in the campfire. their wood is full of water they make plenty of steam. The bamboo enhances flavor. Bamboo is also a fine smoking/grilling wood. Plenty of sugar and soft flavors. Yum. High winds blew these three 50 footers down. A heavy walled bright yellow variety.

That's just wrong. Tela, "devil made me do it". I keep a nice stack of oak at home for camping and am like an ambulance chaser whenever I hear a chainsaw around the neighborhood. Haven't bought any firewood for many years as many people give it away when they cut it down. Here's some gnarly cedar limbs that I found along the coast on the last trip - all destined to become knife handles one day. The cedars grow behind the sand dunes along our coast and are very prolific. I look for the dead fallen branches that have some character with the twists, turns and insect activity. Photo of the limbs as I found them and after I cut and trimmed them down to knife handle size. There are a few that I've cleaned up and stained with a natural oil based stain. I do everything by hand and get a shine on the wood with up to a 1,000 grit sand paper before staining them. Working on these is time consuming so I'm getting a head start on them before I go camping again. This will leave me more time to do some knapping.

I love how you do it all by hand and the collecting, too. I love your work- the handles as much as the blades.
Where do you sell your knives?

I've sold some to local friends here in Columbia and a few more while I'm knapping at campgrounds. When spring comes I'll be taking some to the local flea market along with the fig trees, etc.

I love camping, too, but we go tent camping in National Parks and don't do it enough anymore.
