Got some beach hunting in today... Wow, what is that?! To be honest, I'm not sure. Some kind of seaweed attached to some kind of clam shell....the sights and sounds are still a little fresh out this way with some alien lifeforms.
Nature knows how to present itself...

It's freakin' cold...dropping to 22 below air temperature (40-50 below wind chill)...with a basic repeat for tomorrow night...

jasoninsd Not quite as impressive, I know. But still pretty dang cold, especially to work outside in. And, our hummingbirds don’t migrate! 🥶Poor little guys. I can barely stand a few minutes hauling and stocking before going into the walk-in fridge to warm up.🤣 Little Buz-Buz though has to sleep all night in this. We are worried about them. We keep their feeder area “warm” with Christmas lights, the last of the non-LED kind, and a heated feeder, but they’ve gotta make it through the night to get to it.🤞🤞🤞

Much needed walk today We finally got some cold weather, down to 17 degrees the other night. Made the barrel clean out a little quicker Mt. Rainier with a lenticular cloud this afternoon. View is roughly 35 miles out.

First points of the year. Knapped from some North Carolina milky white quartz I picked up a few years ago. It is hard to find a piece that doesn't have those dreaded cracks. I had a third attempt break in half right on a crack line while I was thinning it down. I knew it would happen and sure enough it broke. Point styles - in the Southeastern US we call these Yadkin style points.

I think Kai wants a sandwich 😁 It must've "warmed up" to 15 degrees outside...so he was just in front of the fridge to cool off while he HAD to be inside! LOL

She is all around, but always elusive. Her tracks left in the snow, her usual winter routine. But every once in a while, she shows herself in the back yard, and allows me to get a few portraits. Beyond the yard, along a granite-bedrock ridge in the forest, her den is about 1000’ away, continuing straight past it, the nearest dirt road is about 5 miles. We’ve been watching each other for several years, she takes occasional meals from the forging squirrels and other rodents under the bird feeder. Last year, using some spectacular feline gymnastics, she took a wild turkey out of mid air as it tried to get away, I witnessed most of the event but my camera was (of course!) inside at the time.

WOW, what a picture ! Hairiest bobcat I've ever seen !

My SIL saw a bobcat in their backyard in Gloucester, Va. She didn't have her camera. I believe her, though. They manage a feral colony of cats and I think he was there to pick off a quick snack.

There are a lot of them around the area where I live, among the highest cat per square mile to be found. I see others of the kind often…I mean every week or 2, usually you get a quick glimpse just long enough to ID then they vanish in the brush. Most of the time, it’s in the dark, in headlights. She raises her kittens in relative peace. In the picture above, it was early Spring and she was still in her winter coat. Here’s a bit of useless info for you: like a female dog being called a bitch, a female cat is called a molly. Maybe there’s a winning trivia-question/answer for you 😀 A couple of Springs ago, a large male Bobcat killed a deer on a friend’s property, and then stayed with his kill for a couple of days afterward. The first night he dragged the deer about 100’ across the clearing it fell in, so he could bury it in brush. I was invited over and got some really nice shots of him. Bobcats (sometimes called the Red Lynx) and the Canada Lynx are both evolved from the same parent species (Eurasian Lynx), they appeared about 100,000 years apart. I don’t know why, I think that is really interesting to understand. Over this way, the Canada Lynx is edging closer and closer, as it spreads southward. They are seen often enough fairly close by, just abit to the North from here, it’s my hope to see and photograph one someday soon. Here is the male that killed the deer, note the deer hair on the ground. One of the handful of very large Bobcats I’ve seen.

Good morning January 29, 2024 Daffodils already? Mine aren't coming in, yet. Oddly.

I noticed some hummingbirds are back around already. I told them to come back in the middle of February. That's when Bossy usually comes back. They are way too early this year.
