jamesp I happen to be a very well trained momma 🤣 my kitty is extremely spoiled, pretty much always gets his way because we can’t resist his cuteness (but also incredibly sensitive to rejection and breaks our hearts when he gets depressed and standoffish). Thankfully he is still very well behaved despite being spoiled! He loves us so much that he WANTS to please us, so has basically trained himself like most of our cats in the past have. Never need sharp words or training or anything… if I don’t want him messing with something I just say “not yours, lovey/baby/punkin” in a gentle voice and he stops touching it. As well “trained” as he is, I think hubby and I are even better trained, though! He wants to be picked up as soon as I am out of bed, then I carry him around while he uses muscle tension to direct me to where he wants to go… 😑

Primal brilliance. They are laughing at our unawareness.

It’s hard to get a good pic of it since he comes out at night… second year in a row that we have had a grey tree frog on this window during the summer, so is likely the same guy! We’ve had spring peepers on the windows as well, but that’s a random occurrence whereas this guy is on the same window night after night.

Too far away to get a good pic, but last year’s twin yearling does just crossed the street to our yard for breakfast, with their fauns. The girls (does) spent all day everyday in our yard last year so they feel safe bringing their babies here too! The girls with their fauns are typically only together at dusk and dawn, when entering and leaving our yard. The rest of the day they are both on or within sight of our property but browsing different areas.

Toadlets are a common sight in the yard at this time of year, but this is the first baby peeper I’ve seen! Hanging out on the tomatillos.

One week after Hurricane Debby and we're back on the coast at Mosquitoville. All the standing water brings on the biting insects. Wife put some anti-itch lidocane lotion on my back and lost count at 32 bites. My shirt probably looks like swiss cheese with all the tiny holes in it. I even sprayed repellent over the entire t-shirt in the morning before I put it on. Unable to go crabbing for now as my favorite spot hasn't reopened yet. When I'm camping along the coast and not crabbing I do some knapping so I need to get to work. Just a few photos from the North Santee River near McClellanville/Bulls Bay area of SC where the eye of the storm came in.

RickB. What do you use your knives for? They look like they would do a fine job. They are also a work of art. Glad you post them.

RickB. What do you use your knives for? They look like they would do a fine job. They are also a work of art. Glad you post them. They are lithic art Pat. I like to flint knap and have been doing so for quite awhile. My interests in artifact hunting and rockhounding led me into the world of primitive tool making. Many years later I can produce a collectible knife which I was encouraged to do by some local friends. I've sold an arrowhead or two at demonstrations, primitive gatherings, etc. Some people were buying my knife blades and making knives out of them. Several years ago I decided to do it for myself. I now have 10 that I've kept for myself made out of different knappable flint/chert/obsidian/jasper. I've probably sold around 35 or 40 just last year mainly to folks that have watched me working on them. Rock is not cheap anymore. I sell a (lithic art) knife, buy more rock, and the cycle continues. Guess I'm a "Rockaholic".

RickB. Hmm, so buyers don’t want them for utilitarian purposes, but rather for the primitive lithic art aspect. Neat! I wonder if that’s true for other flint knappers. Do you think buyers actually use them for anything? I like the primitive lithic art aspect. Thanks.

Do you think buyers actually use them for anything? I like the primitive lithic art aspect. Thanks. Pat, knife collectors and steel knife makers have been buying them just to get one into their collection. Folks that don't even collect knives or want any are actually buying them to give as unique gifts for Christmas and birthdays. Several local people are putting collections together of arrowheads, knives and arrows that I have made and building displays to put them in. Hardly anyone would use them at all as they are pristine and could suffer damage from use. Back in time, the Indians could discard or rechip and sharpen a blade. I did sell one to a full blooded Cree Indian this year. We've been keeping in touch and he said he tried to peel an apple with his knife. Native Americans didn't see an apple tree until they were brought over from Europe. He would have no problem skinning a deer with my knife but it is not an apple peeler. When Native Americans were introduce to metal, they disgarded most of their stone tools and began using metal. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/105893/flint-knapped-knives-sold?page=1&scrollTo=1330801

RickB I’ve considered buying knapped tools for gifts or personal use, but as you said they damage easily. I am REALLY curious about how it feels to use them but would need to learn knapping so I could maintain them myself. Is there anything you prefer to use knapped blades for?

Is there anything you prefer to use knapped blades for? cabby I use primitive stone tools for abrading and chip rocks with a hammerstone to make points with. Some folks hunt with their own hand made arrows tipped with flint knapped arrowheads. There are atlatl and archery contests at primitive gatherings. Some folks use stone knives but I don't as it's lithic art. I like to make knives and arrowheads and it's a major hobby for me that I work at several days a week. At 77 years old I don't know how much longer I will do this and I have been trying to get some of my knives out. 12 15 happy people out there this month. At a primitive knap-in I went to last week, a friend who is a Native American chief, CEO & tribal archaeologist (Eastern Cherokee/Iroquois nation) invited me to participate in a Powwow they will be having at the historic Haygood Mills in South Carolina next May 3. they will be having a full dress re-inactment with dancing, contests and events. I will be one of the (white eyes) flint knappers participating.
