Debra, I think you did great! It's not easy to come up with thousands of dollars for the new lapidary equipment especially if you're trying to set up a little shop where you can do many aspects of lapidary.
I am very thankful that I am gifted enough to take an old piece of junk and turn it into a working piece of machinery and I sometimes take it for granted.
There's quite a story around how I found the saw and what I actually paid for it but it takes too long to type,,,,for a 2 finger typist like me! LOL
Here's the short version.
A friend from TX found two 18" saws here in CT and asked me if I would be interested in buying one of them.I said I was and went to Stamfors Ct to buy them.I paid $1100.00 for two 18" and one 14" slab saws. One of the 18" saws was ready to be used so I shipped it to my buddy in TX as I knew he wouldn't stand a chance trying to get the "wreck" (my saw)running. While I was in Stamford the guy selling the saws asked me if I would be interested in the 14" saw for anoter $300.00.I said yes but didn't have the money with me.He asked how much I had with me and between me and my brother-in -law,who was helping me,we had just about $100.00.The guy said if you want it it's yours for the 100 bucks!!We couldn't load it on my truck fast enough!
The funny part of the story is that I searched every where in the Northeast for years looking for a used saw and here my buddy from TX finds 3 of them in my back yard !!
So,,,,,I think you and I both did pretty good!

I agree with you. We both found some great finds! I couldn't have done it without my hubby's know how...LOL! Paying for it is one thing, getting it running is another...LOL! I am not mechanical! He loves to tinker with things, take things apart and figure out how to make them work. He built our 1st computer from Goodwill parts and curbside junk...LOL! I'm planning on keeping it clean and slab up all my rocks I've collected over the last few months. Than maybe sell it down the road for a newer table top model. They really are hard to come by as I have looked around for the past 6 months. There is a buyers market out there and I'm sure if you decide to upgrade you will have no problem selling yours at a great profit! Atta a guy!

Stefan, I can't wait to take that first cut either.I just got a 7 lb piece of Amethyst sage dendritic agate and am dying to see what's inside.I almost whacked it with a hammer!!
I didn't even give chrome mag's a thought but it sounds like a great idea !!I know for sure there will be a pair of fuzzy dice hanging off of it!!And maybe even some pin striping!!
